When you say the drive isn't showing up under your 'My Computer' menu, I assume you are meaning that the 'My Computer' window that shows two panes (left side and right side) where the hard drives are showing up on the left, that your DVD Recorder isn't there?
Assuming they didn't crack open your case and disconnect the power or ribbon cable from the drive, you should check the Device Manager to see if it shows up there. You may also want to generate a system information report by running "System Information" from your computer, select File/Save and save it to a file, and post it as an attachment here. That will provide those of us who may be able to help you with information that may be of use.
There could be a number of causes: Drivers for the IDE channel where the recorder is connected to may be corrupt/missing. The drivers for the recorder itself could be corrupt/missing. Or simply disabled via the device manager.

One other solution.... the drive was working, even with the virus, and now they messed it up and should be fixed for free.

Maybe try to uninstall your IDE controller drivers in the device manager then reboot so they re-install? A far reach but worth a try. Just visit this link and scroll through until you get to the bit about uninstalling the drivers. Please get back to us and let us know how this works.

ok, I just typed this hole thing out, and then it told me i wasnt logged in, then told me it was an invalid post. So I have to retype the hole thing...Yay for me
Ok, I went to the link u gave me, found sumthin weird. I have 2 primary IDE's and 2 Secondary IDE's
THE FIRST TIME I WROTE THIS..I typed out what they all said under properties>>Advanced Settings. However, I'm not going to do that again! As i'm thinking about it, you prob have all that info with the system thing I sent you.
Anyway...I would try the tutorial you posted, but I don't know wich one is wich, and I don't want to unistall one, and screw sumthin up. I don't think that I told u what my PC is before, maybe that will help a little bit. It's an AlienWare Area-51. The specs on the website are not the same as mine, as mine is custom. I have a 3 page print out of all the crap in it, so if you need to know anything, just ask!
by the way,Thanks for all the help, not many people would help this much.

So I unistalled them and what not, and they auto reinstalled themselves just like you said. DL Windvd...and guess what. No Go. Still not workin. I know everything is pilugged in cause I double checked it like 32 times, the light comes on when I put a dics in, but it doesn't spin. The drivers that I had said I found on the HP site are not the ones for my DVD writer (640c)..so do think I just should just order the other one (640e)...or you think it won't work?Comment
