AVI files take a while to start up

I formatted about a week ago with no problems. I did what I allways do and installed window updates and service pack 2. Now when I try to open up a .avi file it takes a while depending on the size. A 700 mb file will take about 15-25 seconds to startup.. and a 1.5 gig file will take double the time. It's not my computer.. but ill list the drivers I have installed along with my computer specs.

SPECS
ASUS K8V motherboard
AMD 3000+
512 dual chan kingston ram
ATI Radeon 9800 XT 256mb

DRIVERS/VIDEO PLAYERS (RELATED TO PROBLEM)
Latest ati driver
DivX codec (no player)
XviD codec
Quicktime alternative
Real alternative
Winamp

It's a bti annoying considering this has never happened before.. they would allways start up as soon as I opened them.

start playing in mpc, right-click video, select 'filters', and list all shown

i'll assume dma is enabled?

It seems to be a software or codec conflict. I had the same problem with opening .avi files (more than 5 or 6 seconds) anytime I installed the Avi2Dvd program. The problem disappeared instantly as soon as the program was removed. That is the reason, I never rush to install many programs at once, just patiently do one at the time and test to see how it run show I can see easiky which program causes the problem

By Windows updates and SP2, do you mean video drivers too? Audio drivers?

Any yellow exclamations in the device manager?

If all hardware is up to date, I'd look at updating your chipset drivers for the mobo. Alot of people overlook that and it can really help sometimes. Helped me alot when I did, something about the agp bus speed I imagine.

And try to avoid the drivers Windows update gives you. Stick with the manufacturer.
