Media Player Classic has strange problems with video files

    Hi everyone,
I always used Windows 98SE on my laptop and with ffdshow and oggds my media player classic played any video file without problems. After new installation of windows 98SE I'm having strange problems with video playback.
First I tried to install ffdshow-20051124, but it didn't install, because there was a problem with FFDSHOW.AX .Then I tried ffdshow-20060420-gcc4.0.3-sse-x264.nl and it installed, but with most video files it showed the message:
"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor
MPLAYERC executed an invalid instruction in module FFDSHOW.AX"
Then I uninstalled it and installed ffdshow-20051124. It works ok, at least with video images, but most WMV and many AVI files have no sound. MPEG videos work well.
More specifically, when playing WMV files - first moment of the video image freezes, then then the video goes ok, but there's still no sound. Furthermore, files with windows media video 9 have no video image at all. Video output in general is ok, but sometimes, while playing, some pixels freeze.
What should be the problem? maybe audio drivers? or codec conflict? (OggDS0995 is also installed on my laptop). Last time I had Windows Media Plazer 9 installed, but I didn't use it, so this time I didn't install it and I have now only WMP 6...
    Thanks in advance,
    O-pos

use Gspot or Avocodec (both free) and open the video. Either program will tell what codec/s are needed to play the video and if they are installed on your pc.

Thanks for the replies. I checked almost all video files with Mediainfo. Files with no sound had either WMA2 codec, or MPEG-1 Audio layer 3, (one also had AC3). But some files with WMA2 and MPEG-1 Audio layer 3 have normal sound. videos that freezes pixels are WMV2, and that's the case only if corresponding audio output is "sounding" WMA2. (if the WMA2 has no sound, video output is normal).

Installation of windows media player 9 didn't change anythung. So that's not about codecs, because these are typical codecs for WMP 9.

Anonymez, thanks for reading my thread, once your advice helped me very much, so maybe now you also can manage something?

regarding the possible conflict, it's just newly installed win98 SE and no other programs are installed which could cause conflict, including codec packs etc..

Maybe it's about drivers? (my laptop is Medion).

        Thanks again,

ensure you have latest display/graphics card drivers, audio drivers and also latest directx.

          did you try VLC?

The DirectX is the latest, but I think the audio drivers are not ok, because under "audio devices" there are only two Maestro ESS or something, and the mp3 playback is not smooth, it stutters. The sound stutters even in video files. I'll try to update drivers and get back to you.

I didn't try VLC because I thought that after MPC and WMP9 had exactly similar problems, VLC wouldn't help much. But if you think it can help, I'll give it a try.

So you think it looks more like a driver problem than a software conflict? But for sure it's not about codecs, is it?

what version of directx are you using?

have you booted into safe mode and removed ghosts from device manager?

until recently I kept a collection of files I used for a clean install of 98se, there were 3 updates
that I always used, IE 5.5 sp2, directx 8.1, media player 6.4? Anywhere past this level, issues
could develope. This last year I abandoned W98, reccomending W2k for computers that's couldn't handle Wxp.
I'll have to look for one of my old cd's.

unlikely it's codec related. as for drivers, are you sure you installed the correct ones for win98, and not 2000/xp? for recent ffdshow builds you'll need this http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Finally it works.. However, after lot of efforts:

I took it to the service center next to my house. the guys installed certain drivers, but it didn't help and they gave me my laptop back telling me that they don't understand what it is.

then I found a driver exactly for my laptop model in www.treiberupdate.de (sometimes it's helpful to know german). It's installation apparently damaged windows. So I reinstalled windows. I ckecked several drivers again, but only the last one (from treiberupdate) did work. So I think now that it was both driver's and windows' problem. My previous windows had been infected by viruses and maybe there were some mistakes after "treatment".

Thanks for help, anonymez. Which media player is finally better, MPC by Gabest or VLC? which one can catch reat-time online windows media and quicktime streams?

                    Regards,

mpc is better-- i find VLC to be slow, buggy and a little constricted in comparison.

mpc can play online content, download quicktime alternative

hey guys! What a nice forum here, one'll find answers for everything.

Well, I'm using Quicktime and real Alternatives, but they only work after the files are already downloaded on hard drive. for any online content I get message for downoading corresponding player. do I have to activate or swith something in MPC options?

                            Hello all,
Nowadays that I turn my BSPlayer on and open a VOB or a MPG/MPEG file, I get a strange message entitled: “The dancing elecard logo means that your evaluation period has expired. Please register your player. More info at -some website-."

I don’t know what could be happening there, since I’ve not downloaded any MPEG trial whatsoever.

I’ve deleted BSPlayer, installing it again, older versions, etc, and continues to happen.

Strangely, it doesn’t seem to happen in MPlayer classic.

Again, thank you for your time.

Uninstalling ALL codecs added on top of OS default then installing latest version of K lite Mega fixed same issue I had with Gabest mp Classic. If you do decide to do this ensure u restart PC after removal & also delete temp files before restarting & installing K Lite - leave all settings to default...unless u know what changes u need

                              Hope it helps.
