    Laptop lost DVD-RW Drive

    Please help!
I have a Dell laptop, yesterday I put in Nero and ad-awareSE. I then tried to copy files onto a disc in my dvd-rw. The laptop said that my dvd-rw was'nt there, Windows say that the drivers are still there and up to date, but that the drive isn't. There is power in the drive and when a disc is put in, it spins. Up until i put the progs in it was working fine. I tried un-installing drivers and drive and then reinstalling but no success. I also tried a system restore with no effect. Its telling me that there has been a change to the registry which is causing it, but I have not a clue how to fix it. And being a DELL there is no start up disc.

Right click on my computer, go to properties-device manager-hardware-cd/dvd drives...are there any yellow "?" or "!" symbols there?

Uninstall nero, uninstall adaware, go into device manager after rebooting,
is the drive there? Adaware may have stopped or hosed a registry change
that nero was making. Spybot's teatimer and registry protection has been giving me fits with XP sp2 updates and norton's updates(wmi).

Make sure adaware is not loaded whenever you are installing any good programs or updates. All this protection is hosing computers as bad as the malware.

Thanks I'll give it a try. I'm also going to try and network my 2 laptops and copy the Registry over if that doesn't work I'll try fixing with my copy of XP. The Dell had its own XP installed at scource so not sure how it will take it. Oh well here goes.

won't work, there will be a utility(dell) for a clean install from a hidden partition on your hard drive or an option to make the disks(too late?)

                  @chewy

Would deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry help?

It might, but you would have to know what in the heck happened first?
Regedit should be a measure of last resort, especially when dealing with someone else's computer.

That reminds me, one of my friends relative's dell got hosed with norton's security suite and she couldn't burn the reinstall disks, after I explained what happened and she called dell back up and complained about it they sent her
reinstall disks free of charge. If you lose the ability to make the disks, MS requires them to furnish a disk, hehehehe!

Another thing there was a utility running around to disable those filters,
                    didn't save!

I completely agree, both of my drives went away last week...while searching for a solution I found the regedit fix and it was simple. When I got into the registry it looked like AnyDVD's drivers were masking my drives somehow...strange.

When you troubleshoot your drive in device manager, is there an error code supplied? Like code 41?

Yup that was the one, for code 41...don't know what caused it to go afoul at that time and place though. I installed a HDD a week earlier and everything was fine up until that point. Rebooted one day and AnyDVD stated that no drives were found on my puter, that is how I found out. They just up and dissapeared. Go figure.

EDIT: Actually, I was defragging...woke up in the morning and puter was frozen, hard reboot and drives were gone.

Just a possible solution, right click my computer and select properties, click the hardware tab, then click device manager see if you can see your dvd-rw in the list it generates, if it is there click on it and then at the top press uninstall (monitor screen with red cross through) once its done then press the icon with a magnifying glass / monitor to scan for hardware changes, this should find the uninstalled drive and re-install it and may resolve the issue.

Yup did that several times now. Still comes with a not working yellow circle. The copying of registry didn't work either. I Managed to get the XP disc to work through the bios and tried to fix it with that but lost my way. At least I know that worst case scenario I can totally reformat if need be. The error number I'm getting is (code 19)
