Besides the permanent setting that mill showed, you can also hold the shift key down when deleting something and it won't go to trash can.

I've been spending some time with Nvu and it is quite good. Couldn't get one of their addins to work all that well - the animated tute as I dunno how to run the rdf file. But the help file is comprehensive enough.

I think open office will open up the rdf file I'm not 100% sure though
