Open a command box (Start/Run and type CMD) then type VOL C: and hit enter. Then you can use a VolumeID tool available for free on the net to set your volume ID back to what it currently is just incase you have to reformat your hard disk. The VolumeID counts as one of the votes taken when your system boots and if it changes that's one vote lost out of three. I still have an image of my install I'll use, but it's nice to know my concerns were satisfied.

Excellent idea, thank you! Silly me for adding the new HDD, then deciding to remove the old one and start fresh. All is well just down to one more activation if something drastic were to happen.

A buddy of mine got nabbed by M$ with a version of XP Corporate that was being counterfeited. He bought the Pro version from M$, they sent him the disc and key, he changed the corp key installation key to the Pro key M$ sent him, he continues to get updates from M$ without a reinstall and reactivation. He's running the latest WGA too. So he says

        Pro key M$ sent him,
for which he paid dearly, and it's probably a special key for reformed sinners.

Even without activation when he goes to windows update they can check
anything on his computer they want, his bank balance whatever, after all they wrote windows and you have to say always trust anything from microsoft.

bottom line: they don't make him put run retail xp pro as a repair disk over xp corporate

Corporate edition is the only edition that will allow multiple PC's to have the same key. Hence the name "Corporation Edition". They were having such a complaint by businesses and corporations when they had to reformat/reinstall XP on all of their business/networked PC's, so they decided to allow multiple PC's to use the same key.

That is why so many people have it at home! LOL

corporate is exempt from activation, windows update does not support corporate, see your network administrator

Maybe the key makes it look like Corporate and does that, he says he still get updates, fixes and notifications from windoze that updates are available and installs them. He says he is even running the latest wga also

Will vista be this bad? or even worse? I can't help but be curious to get it when it comes out for the little bells and whistles, but man it will likely be a pain.

You can bet Vista will be a whole lot better for M$ to make sure nobody runs a boot leg copy. Until the powers to be find a way around it that is

I don't mind if people are punished for trying to use it illegally. It's good people like us that spend our money on new expensive software and still get hassled.
