    nat firewall
not sure what you mean by that...

The modem is not a hardware firewall...

xp sp1 installs with firewall off
yep, I do know that. I disconnect from the 'net when doing reinstall, & then make sure I have firewall, either ZoneAlarm or XP firewall turned on when I do need to get online for the final critical updates.

Must leave for the evening, but my first order of business tom. will be working in safe mode & doing what you suggested.

    Will reply w/ my results.

    'till then!

Thanks & have a good night!

    Cheers, katz

Google "nat or not" - it's a free site that will detect a NAT firewall for you.

ok - checked w/ nat or not . I do not use nat.

also, booted into safe mode this morn., tried changing home page there - no good, still goes back to msn. Also checked spybot for the setting there that is supposed to cause this prob., but it is set correct also.

I also use opera. I can change the home page there & it will keep the change.

        ...I'm still in the dark...

update your av, download trojanhunter, update, reboot into safe mode and run everything while disconnected from the internet

ok - looks like I am back in business! I ran AVG & trojanhunter (nice pgm) in safe mode, came up clean.

Since I was already in SM, I decided to change the start page (again). This time it worked. When I am back to the desktop now, it is keeping my changed setting.

Don't know what fixed it, wish I did, in case it happens again... But all is well for now!

            Another satisified customer!

            Regards, katz

I have the same problem started after i had to format my machine but i have found a way to get round the problem do the following if for example you want google to be your home page from msn get the google search engine up then goto file then goto send then hit shortcut to desk top then exit out to your desktop you should have a google icon on your desktop just hit that and it will load up google straight away so you will be onto the net with the home page of your choice

If you run SpyBot, there's an option to lock the IE home page & several other settings. Dig it up & unlock it.

good tip! I found that on google, but mine wasn't locked to start with.

a good workaround! I had done that before - also, another neat thing to do is set it as a quick launch icon on the taskbar - keeps some of the clutter off the desktop!

                  Thanks all!

out of curiousity; did you install sp2 from CD, or download from msoft?

I was wondering if big bill might have "locked" the ie home setting to msn on the CD....

if you ever reload make sure sp2 is installed before connecting to the internet,
time for a new cable modem with router/switch built in with nat firewall

it's also not that hard to slipstream the admin download of sp2 into your cab files from your xp cd and do a clean install from xp sp2, much better than the upgrade path
