I was looking at the E510 when the special sale on the xps caught my eye. my wife has taken over my 4600 playing the Sims and I convinced her I needed a new one so I wouldn't have to rush her to end her games. By the way, is the video card any good? got the same one but I have always used Nvidia cards>>

                              ...
Buying a new computer with OS preinstalled usually means
that there is so much crap also installed. AOL and other ISP
crap, etc., etc. It seems over the past few years the PC
manufactures have included more and more crap. And it
is getting harder and harder to remove it. IMHO some of
this extra crap may get in the way of speedy video backuping.

I think now it is so much better to install everything, including
the OS yourself. And that doesn't necessarily mean Microsoft.
Microsoft stuff costs a lot of money. I've been experimenting
with Linux OS's and think this is becoming the way to go,
at least for someone with some computer savey.

My last Dell (bought Oct 2000) is now running Ubuntu Linux.
The (legal) cost of Ubuntu OS was the price of a blank CD.
Little by little I am expanding its functions. Next I will install
a DVD RW drive and see if I can do backups of DVDs as easily
as with my newer Windows boxes.

Recycling my old box has been a very good educational experience
for this old daug. Open Office is a very good sub for MS Office
and is available in both Linux and MS Windows flavors. Its free.
See www.openoffice.org Backing up CDs has not been a problem
using Ubuntu Linux. All necessary codexs were readily available.
The Ubuntu forum has been a great help.

Good luck with your new Dell. I hope support is as good
as before they outsourced to India, etc. Also I hope there
is a good Dell forum, independantly run.

I think Dell now sells some of their boxes sanes (without) OS.
Bill Gates and Micheal Dell are old buddies. I think they may have
roomed together in college. When Bill was called before the US
Congress, Micheal was sitting right behind him, providing support.
                              ...
