    connect my comp and laptop

i have lan ethernet cards on both my computer and my old laptop, but for some reason when i connect those two i get "cable unnplugged" message for both of them.i have also a connection point/router to which my computer is connected with wireless adapter.this router also has 4 LAN "inputs"
now i want to transfer some files from my comp to this old laptop...but as i dont understand anything about networking etc i need help...

it seemed it would be easiest to connect those directly, but as said i get "cable unplugged" messages

when i connect laptop to router its ok,but then i dont know how/or if it is possible at all, to, somehow ,foward the connection to the wireless adapter and to the computer...

i know this is possibly badly explained, but i hope youll get some of this...

    my old laptop
are you running win 98 on the laptop, by any chance?

when I had to do a similar connection, (between win 98 & xp) I had to use a "crossover cable"; a special cable designed for the networking between the two pc's.

May be an alternate way of doing it, but that is what worked for me...

EDIT: also found these helpful links. http://ask-leo.com/can_i_network_two...t_a_cable.html

    regards, katz

          CAT5
thats a "standard" network cable - you need the "crossover" one. I bought one at my local pc shop for around $5.

then you tell it the name of your workgroup(same for each computer)
next/ turn on file and printer sharing!

next/ no networking disk / reboot

do this with both machines/ let them see each other/ it takes a while
