You would be surprised what a 1 gig usb2 drive will hold, as for critical security updates, they only slow your machine down. No firewall, no av,
no spyware, no need if you are using a standalone.

I think if I was REALLY into DVD/CD back-up and high performance computers, I would build or buy a barebone custom high performance and just add on performance equipment. Engineer it strictly for performance and speed.
