Is DDR2 Significantly Better for Encoding?

I am considering building a new computer. The only reason I am considering this is that my encoding with DVD Rebuilder (using HC with various filters) is often very slow.

One significant cost of a new rig could be the RAM. I already have a gig of PC3200 DDR. If I get a motherboard that requires DDR2 it would increase my expense by $85-$170 (512 Mb - 1Gig).

Would the DDR2 significantly increase my encoding speed? What percentage?

Is 1 gig of RAM essential for encoding with DVD-RB?

My present rig is AMD Barton 2500+ overclocked to 2 GHz with 374 FSB.

is it duo core mother board, if it is I would think so shrink, rebuilder or most of encode program ( the one I know cucusoft or nero would go alot faster)

If you are on a tight budget stick with a amd X2 64 939, and agp sckt 939
motherboard, my amd xp mobile @ 2200 is about 2/3 as fast as my amd64
@2500, with an amd X2 4200 and 4.4GHZ you should double your speed.

However if your ram is crap, it probably won't work, need very good ram to keep up with these amd 64's.

I run with 1Gb of Corsair DDR3200 2-3-3-8 with an AMD 3800+ X2 and get near real time encoding in full D1 with Procoder Mastering quality (dual processes, of course) using the regular decoder and skal IDCT.

Any other encoder will be quicker, esp CCE.

Spend the $$$.

I had been thinking of the X2 3800 but the X2 4200 is still within my price range. I have Kingston Value RAM so I can probably do better with the Corsair. At least now I know my options. If I don't want to buy everything all at once, I can start out using my Kingston and then upgrade to the Corsair or equivalent later.

Chewy. Do you have specific motherboards you recommend that are of high quality and overclock well. I can spend whatever I need to spend. I don't want to waste money but I want to be satisfied with it for a few years...Sorry if this question is redundant. I will search to see if you have provided this information in another thread.

Have a look at some good reports by ripraff (I think) over at the rebuilder forum at doom9. He's overclocking a 3800 to 2.4Ghz and getting better results than a 4200.

I am on an A8N-SLI Premium by the way.

A 2.0 to 2.4 would be a 20% overclock, the 4200 starts at 2.2. Problem with the overclock is not being able to overclock the ram also. Another worry is the heat generated from 2 cores, the X2's run hotter than single core for that reason, take better heatsinks.

this memory will keep up with the cpu up to fsb of 250(25%) oc for cpu

I like asus for overclocking, no agp's left tho

MY 3800 X2 runs at 50C doing dual process encoding (100% CPU usage). Fan is around 2200RPM. It has stacks left in it.

at 50C the amd64's are running hot, don't ever hit 60 with them

my lowly single core with premium cooling finally hit 50C the other day, it took an 85F room temp and 2 hours of 2 pass with vision to get there.

Need a blow out of dust badly. Damn cat fuzz, they shed.

50 is fine for a dual core at 100%, with stock cooling, I was just joking about overclocking, for dual core and encoding I wouldn't reccomend it.
