Issue with Windows Media Player 10

I don't know if i'm posting in the right place or even the right forum, but if anybody can help me it would be appreciated. After searching for a long time I can't seem to find a solution to a codec problem I am having with windows media player (wmp) 10. After re-installing my divx, xvid, ac3 codec, and cccp (combined community codec package) my wmp 10 player couldn't play any audio files. Even when it plays .avi files it has no audio.

Now, I have tried run regsvr32.exe l3codeca.acm and the reinstalling of \l3codecx.ax and \l3codeca.acm (I have the currect version). I have also tried to add hardware and install Microsoft IMA ADPCM CODEC and Microsoft ADPCM CODEC. No success (well success as in I was able to do both but unable to produce any audio). So if anybody could help me or even refer me to a different forum for help, it would be appreciated.

    Thanks

oh, forgot to mention, I do get audio just not from wmp.
I just tried to open an .avi file and i can't open it in either realplayer or wmp; however, i can in quicktime.
For mp3 I tried to open it in realplayer and quicktime and they work, but not in wmp.

So if anybody knows what i'm missing, let me know. This is driving me crazy.

      Thanks

        sorry, missed this thread

shounds like dshow is screwed up. download graphedit, go file-->render media file, pick an avi and post a screenshot of the graph

I have tried run regsvr32.exe l3codeca.acm and the reinstalling of \l3codecx.ax and \l3codeca.acm
last i heard cccp contains ffdshow which should handle most audio formats. unregister.

I think I found my problem, I think i'm definitely missing an audio codec. Right now I have divx, xvid, ac3 filter, and the cccp bundle (which includes ffdshow, haali media splitter, mpv decoder, vsfilter, gabest realmedia splitter, and windows media 9 vcm). Do I need anything else??? Do i need something to decode mpeg layer-3 stuff? If I do any suggestions?

              Thanks

open the avi in virtualdubmod, go file-->file information and post a screenshot

don't know why you're intent on using wmp especially since other freeware players are just so much better, eg MPC and VLC both of which have an internal avi splitter and audio decoders. if you still wish to make wmp work, try uninstalling cccp, divx (unless you do divx encoding), install ffdshow (from http://www.x264.nl) and haali's media splitter (be sure to enable avi support during installation)
