Your internet still works because you use broadbard with ethernet card instead of phone modem. Even though you use broadband internet with ethernet connection and no longer use phone modem, the phone modem's still connected to the mobo via PCI card. It's still have to be in working order with compatible driver installed. If its driver is corrupted or the connection is no good, the modem still causes trouble. Unless you remove it completely from your PC as sugeested by Chewy

I was thinking about low level dma(?) interrupts, irq's etc causing conflicts as
resources are passed from bios to the OS.

thanx for the info guys. all i know about dma is it's on from a nero log. the thing never seems bogged or slow or anything like that. i guess i'll just remove it since i'll never be using dial-up. i'll also try making a new connection like tig did. i almost did it on my own the other day but stopped in case i made it worse

ok, i can't sit down and relax and do this now. but i'll get this done soon enough. i'll remove the modem gizmo, maybe take a snapshot of it and post it to make sure. cause then i'll smash it to pieces (bloody rights i will). and you're right about VC, top slot

sometimes it has to be done, the pieces end up there though. from all the pain i've suffered from this, it's the right thing to do.

If you keep smashing and thowing away every component or its driver without fixing it, just a year from now, I bet your PC will still run but with merely a bare case without a single part inside

update:

i noticed yesterday a folder in c/program files..."top search"

ha! nice. where did that sunnavagun come from i thought. google told me it was devilish. couldn't delete it, but it had an uninstaller in it. that worked. since then explorer has not tripped and no net disconnects. explorer would have crashed 20-30 times by now. none of my spyware scanning crap picked it up. might be on to something....

i'm still going to smash that old modem good though. this won't change that. i'll even post a nice picture for you all to see too.
