hi. was just wondering if anyone could help me out. no matter what program i use (shrink, decrypter, etc) and no matter how much or little copy protection the dvd has (Arccos or standard encryption), my rip either fails completely at around 50% or the ripping speed slows to between 0.2x and 0.7x. i checked already checked to make sure my dvd drive is not in PIO mode so that is not the problem. the computer is also fairly new (got it in August) so im hoping the driver is not damaged. i dont really see anything that could have cause that to happen. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Ripping fails at around 50% on every dvd

yes, my problem doesnt seem related to copy protection. i know how to use ripitforme, the wizard, imgburn, and all the other tools.Comment

What drive is it?
Does it start out fast and then slow down never to speed up again? Sounds like it is defective/dirty.
I'm gunna transfer this to General Computing as it sounds like a HW issue.

sorry about that.
its my E: drive, firmware is HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B E112 if thats what you mean.
but yes, it starts out fast, gets to around 50% of the disc and slows down. sometimes it speeds up again but usually it does not. it seems like it has to get over the "hump" of 50%. if my drive is dirty, is there an easy way to clean it without taking my computer apart. also, the dvds i am ripping a new and have no scratches.Comment

OK, it's an LG, like mine. They slow and don't recover easily.
2 things:
1. Update your firmware - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2279
2. In DVD Decrypter (assuming you use it), recycle your tray after read errors. Tools → Settings → Cycle Tray After Bad Sectors
You could buy a drive cleaning kit - they're pretty cheap. Or talk to your supplier. This should not be happening on every DVD.

I'm told that Maxell makes a good one. But your PC is new. Take it back. You may have got a bung drive.

Beware, Dell will do everything in their power to not help you (including telling you that trying to rip a DVD is illegal). Just follow along with them and tell them "sorry that doesn't work". They'll eventually give up and send you what you paid for - a working DVD drive.

Intermittant ripping failure could be caused by several things:
Bad DVDs.
Dirty drive.
Etc.
But my feeling is that you you are probably using a MS Windows OS and could
have other programs running in the background which conflict with your ripping.
Check out your startup items group and compare it with www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
They have a hugh list and advise about each item.
Also clean and defrag your pc. Update your malware programs and rerun them.
[Don't you just love a MS OS with all the time and expense required to maintain it?
That's why I'm switching to Linux!]
When I have a rip/burn project to do in MS Windows, I always reboot first.
Then I turn off things like Skype first before starting my project.
I haven't tried to rip/burn in safe mode yet, but you might try that.
Any comments on ripping in safe mode??
I would think it would be cleaner and faster.
If my software solutions don't help, then I bet your drive is bad.
Call Dell. Simply say the drive craps out at midway thru a job.
And like Blutach says follow their directions.
Hopefully you will get a good tech. Some are good, some are bad.

yeah, i updated the firmware as soon as i got it. ripping is a little slower than the LG (20 minutes vs. 30 minutes) but the burn seems to be better.Comment
