    2 Questions on Partitioning

OK the other day I did a clean install of XP I am happy to say that all went well I wish I would have done this the last time on my old computer I could have saved myself a $100. But any way back to my question... when it asked me which partition to delete I noticed there were two other things that were on my HD if I remember right they were fat32 I was wondering if you knew what they could be.

    Second Question
Soon I will be getting my Ubuntu and like an idiot I didn't partiton my drive to make room for a dual boot my HD is a WD 80 gig .My question is what size should I partition XP to make room for Ubuntu.
    Thanks for your time

the eisa partition is a boot type one that just hides the recovery partition from you and windows, that is an 80 gig hard drive, the unknown partition has your factory install files on it.

I took one like this and deleted all partitions by hooking it to another windows xp computer and repartitioned it from scratch.

Sound like you have, or had, two partitions on your hard drive. One partition is the NTFS file system, and the other partition is the FAT 32 file system.

Normally the entire hard drive, if one partition for XP operating system is the NTFS file system.

I have two partitions on my 120GB hard drive, one 100GB of NTFS and the other partition of 20GB of FAT32. The FAT32 file system is mandatory if you have the software program Acronis True Image hard drive back-up sytem.
Stick with the NTFS file system on all your hard drives if possible.

you really need 3 partitions, one "root" (or simply "/"), one "home" and one "swap". they are for programs, files/documents and virtual memory respectively.

for root say ~6GB will be plenty. home you will need to decide, swap somewhere 1-2GB

edit: be sure to use gparted to do the partitioning, run it from the live cd (or during installation)
