So I was messing around with the network settings on my old Win98se machine trying to figure out how to get it to network with my WinXP laptop (finally got wireless at home). Now, my Norton antivirus says it can't read the boot records on my hard drive (shows drive#0, then #1, then C). Used to work a few weeks ago. I have admin rights on the computer (no password, no logon screen). What did I screw up? Thanks.

Logon screen for the Win98 comp (user name and password). I eliminated that, but Norton seems to think that it doesn't have full access to the hard drive (?). Actually, the old desktop runs quite a long time with Win98- I have all of my mapping software for my GPS on it. I'm not going to network the comps together. I may just do a clean hard drive wipe and start over.Comment

It's been quite a while since I put a 98 computer on a wired network, but I seem to remember it worked better just getting on the internet even if I didn't want to share files between computers. If they are hooked to the same connection(router) there are files that 98 still needs that the network setup makes it load. Defining the workgroup and protocol make things go a lot smoother.Comment

I'm not going to worry about networking the Win98 comp. I was only considering it because the new wireless DSL router is plugged into it (location of the desktop is more convenient than hooking up the laptops). I'm just trying to figure out why all of a sudden Norton Antivirus says it can't read the boot records of the hard drive.Comment
