    No screen after cleaning

    This morning I took apart my computer took everything out and cleaned it completly removed my floppy drive and my modem, put everything else back in, I am 99% sure I hooked everything back up right. When i turn it on, i hear it going thru the boot proscess the fans come on, but I dont get any display on my monitor. The only thing I can think of that might be wierd, is when I took off my heatsink over my cpu, the cpu was plasterd to the bottom of my heat sink. In other words I didnt flip the latch up and remove the cpu it just came with the heatsink. Simply put I am getting no picture on my monitor with boot up.

    Just to answer the simple questions, yes my monitor is receving power, yes my monitor is plugged into my computer correctly and yes the monitor still works. ( Checked it )

    One thing that comes to mind, and this has happened to me before on Compaq comps, if you don't get the video card inserted just right things get whacky.

        I'm guessing some how i scrwed my video card during removal, maybe static elec even though I conastaly touched teh case. If it was jacked would the fan still spin on it? Also to test it I can put any video card from another computer in it right?

            i reseated it 5 times since I posted this. If it was the cpu it wouldnt go tru boot process right? I have fans my drive opens the hd seems to be running.

            I think im going to order my new video card for that system I desgined and see if that is the problem. Or maybe a cheapy

              I remember something like this where I got a dust bunny lodged under the video gpu heat sink, blew the sob out with an air compressor and it worked

              toothpick might work(gentle) hold it up against a bright light and look under the heatsink where it overlaps the chipset?

                Did you try booting into safe mode -vga maybe you have to select the video card reload driver?

                  @chewy I saw some dust under there but all I could do was blow it out the best I could. I have a dell LCD monitor and when the cord is un-plugged from the video card it does a Self Test thing where a lil box floats around teh screen with colors and the name of the color. The second I plug it into the video card taht goes away.

                  @mill I cant see anything so I cant get into safe mode, I dont get a screen at all when I power on

                    Are you getting any BIOS error beeps, like one for a graphics adapter error?

                      No beeps at all, sounds exactlly normal like its loading everything. Just no screen.

                        Maybe the connector on your monitors cord has a bent pin at the plug (svga plug). Or possibly one pin or more got shoved down into the plug mold and cannot make contact on the other connector on the video card.

                          I use the cord with the white head, and now that I look at it
                          ||| |||
                          |||> i|| - Thats the front of my plug Lol
                          ||| |||
                          The ( i ) represents a prong thats shorter then the rest, could one not making full contact cause it? But if thats the case I dont understand how it could work in the morning before I dissasembled the comp, and after it doesnt work anymore.

                            Well its possible if that pin was level with all the others, it could have been just slightly out of alighnment prior to cleaning this morning, and when it was time to re-connect after cleaning, it got shoved just a little more..enough to not make contact.

                            Usually if there is a pin that is not required in the cluster, there is no pin in that spot. But if there is a pin there, chances are good it was not fully seated at the factory when the plug was assembled and it was just enough to pass QC before you got it, and continued to run until today. Its hard to say for sure without another identical plug to compare with, but I believe that is probably the cause.

                            If you can, take a fine pair of needle-nose pliars and gently pull on that pin, being carefull to not use excess force when pulling. If that pin moves outward and appears to be level with all the others, try it and hopefully, that will fix it right up.
