much as I worry about data on dvd's, hard drives worry me more

imagine if you had spent 2-3 hours per title encoding to mpeg4 and had it full
400-600 titles

I'd be chasing Mr. Seagate with a baseball bat in both hands. Now I wonder if they are gonna send me a reconditioned drive back when I send it to them. And how many times is this gonna happen during the 5 year warranty period. Hopefully this one was a Monday morning manufactured drive and the other one I bought was a Wednesday one

I got the receipt, emails and the box to ship it back

I got a about 10 year old Maxtor still ticking and a 20GB Deathstar too but they didn't take a beating right outta the chute with DVD's like the drives do now. But I sure gave them a workout with CDs/mp3s

Between work and friends/relatives, we had about 10 of the deathstars,
40 or 60 gig models, within a year 5 or 6 were dead, the club spent 3 months digitizing audio cd's(slow go back then), raid stripe, lost it all. Within another year all but one was dead. The guy that bought most of them said he would never buy another IBM drive, he ordered hitachi serials(2x80) for another raid stripe, after about a year they lost 2 weeks of a ladies work trying to catch up on the bookkeeping.
I let a 30 gig maxtor(new slimmer design) sit for year, it died within hours of me using it. I traded for a slightly used 160 gig maxtor which had been banged around in an external case for a few months, it blew up!
Probably know of 30 Maxtor drives in the 13 gig to 80 gig range that are still
going strong.

I put all my eggs in the seagate 200 and 250 gig serial basket.

I have been real lucky with the Maxtors (fingers crossed) from 15GB to 200GB) all of which are in use and still working (15GB , 30GB 2(160GB and 3 (200GB). I had trouble with 1 40GB (that I mentioned previously that I dropped) it is still working but ticking ahhhhhh, I don't put anyhing on it I don't mind losing

The 20GB deathstar is in a 500 Mhz PC a cousin gave me about 6 months ago when he upgraded that has Nov 1999 on the HDD sticker . I'm thinking about throwing a version of Linux on it if it will handle it.

I would have said Seagate but looks like they are having troubles, Maxtor has a good rep but got chincy on their warranty

the say the number 1 cause of premature failure is from rough handling, maybe JM's got dropped
at the factory or the store.

Chewy like I said it could be a fluke with a Monday morning made one and I got a bad one . I got my fingers crossed with the other one though. This is the thing I was afraid of with BIG HDD's too many eggs in one basket. UPS has it, and it's on the way back to Seagate. $99 each to buy the 400GBers and $8.67 to send 1 back to Seagate is still good deal

And Seagate took over Maxtor All of my Maxtors have had 1 year warrantys and have lived past the warranty period and like the 40GB, take a licking and just keep on ticking

I say Seagate, I've had the BEST with them ..... lost TWO WD's in the past and they sent reconditioned drives, the replacements have held up over a 2+ yr span ..... never had a Seagate go bad .... yet ..... bt I always have a second drive just to backup on in each box at startup ....

I have an external Maxtor 250. I put it in an external case for back ups. I had to format the drive Fat32 due to 98SE machine still in use. Now that it is no longer, I was wondering if I should install it on the IBM and reformat to NTFS or leave it external for back up? It's only a few years old with not much on it.

Or the shipper, I forget if it was UPS or Fedex, used the box for practicing field goals. Although the box was in excellent shape.

You mighta hit the nail on the head Chewy, I got a OEM burner from newegg in a shipping box that looked brand new but the burner inside wrapped in bubble paper and foam beeds had a smashed in corner Needless to say newegg replaced it promptly.

I got my replacement drive from Seagate yesterday. They sent a new retail boxed 500GB 7200.9 HDD to replace my 400GB 7200.10 that went kaput on me.

I'm looking to add a HD for music editing (Pro Tools). The one thing the software developer insists on is that you have a separate HD to store and edit music files. They do not want you to use your operating system HD for your music storage.
Below is the Everest scan of my current HD. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on an additional HD? Should I stick with the same specs. as the old HD?

BB had a seagate 160 gig for 70$ w/ 30$ rebate = 40$

main thing would be keep plenty of free ram

I put in the 1GB ram a month ago. I had a feeling when I spoke to you last about upgrading the IBM I would need a bit more ram. Or just lucky....?
