PC can't see External Hard Drive

I am plugging my Western Digital external HD into my USB port and it is plugged into the surge protector, but my PC is not seeing it. Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Kabu

I right click on start>explore and then look for the removable F drive and the F drive isn't there.

Are you taking about My Computer? I don't see a "Manage" there

                Hi Kabu
Maybe this will help...right click on My Computer Icon on your desktop.
Then you should see Image #1, click on "Manage"

                  Thanks uufta and katz!

Now I see a bunch of USB ports, but which one is the one I'm using? I have it plugged into the top in the front of the PC.

how about start>computer> manage>storage> disc management
Night was referring to disc management, not device manager.

Click on manage, then storage, then disc management. That will open a window to show the drives connected to the pc; HD, DVRW, ZIP, etc. When you get that far, post a screen shot of that window.

leave the drive on and check in every usb plug till XP sees it, have you tried another usb cable?

I tried another cable, no luck. I plugged my camera in to make sure the USB ports are functioning and they are.

Here is a screenshot of Disc Mgmt and the Removable F drive isn't there although I have the HD on and plugged in.
