One more question. My computer is a AMD 3700 with an Asus K8VSE board. I have 2 gigs ram and 3 hard drives and Lite sohw1633 Burner. Would it be beneficial to get a PCI controller card that could handle the DVD burner or would the set up that you (Chewy) recommended be optimal? Would it be worth putting the burner on the card also?

You are missing the "bottom line", cards don't support atapi drives well, my mobos can handle 4 serial hard drives(dvd burners still have issues),
my mobo ide controllers are exclusively dedicated to optical drives which run best on them. Any ide hard drive would be better on a controller card as that frees up the motherboard for optical drives, The real geeks over at cdfreaks with 10 and more optical drives(mostly burners) in server cases use controller cards to supplement their motherboards. Of course they get these drives free to test and review.

Thanks Chewy, that explained it perfectly. I didn't understand the difference or the "why". I do now. "Tanks a million".

I purchased a card locally and was astounded . The drives open up almost before I select them. Configuring everything a snap. This was an inexpensive upgrade that was really well worth it. Tanks.
