New PC

Hi... Can anyone advise on the easiest way to transfer fairly big files from 'old' PC to new one. Both have USB2. Files are to big for memory stick types. Thanks.

if you can't network the computers then an external usb2 hard drive would be the way to go, I usually just pull the hard drive out of the old computer and hook it to the cable running an optical drive in the new computer, lot faster for a lot of gigs

There is a program called Intellimover but it's a little expensive.

Chewy also helped me out when I had the same problem. I ended up using Mozy.com and when I downloaded the files, I just downloaded to the new PC.

do you have a DVD-RW on both, or even if its on one of them and you are slighlty tech savvy, you can install on the old one, burn and then move to the new one and copy into the HDD.

Buy a crossover cable ($5). Hook one end into the ethernet port of one PC, the other into the other. New drives are recognised in both PBs. The just drag and drop.

No need for optical media, external HDs or anything. The files go across at IDE speeds.

Thanks to all of you for replies. 'Old' PC has no DVD, only CD writer, 'New' has of course.
Dont know about ethernet connections on either, but will check it out. (both are grandsons PCs, not here).
Is USB to USB practical ?????

usb to usb is from a hard to find adapter that costs way more than it's worth

real easy to just remove the old hard drive and hook it up outside the new box

how much data does he need to move?
