I just bought a new burner and checked the Firmware Page. The version on my burner is one below the most current one. I'm from the "If It Ain't Broke - Don't Fix It" school of thought. Is it always necessary to upgrade to the latest?
Is It Always Necessary To Update Burner Firmware?

most times burners ship with firmware that isn't mature, I usually have the newest downloaded and ready to flash when my drive arrives, there are a few exceptions but later firmware mostly improves the burns and media support.
if your drive shipped with the 3rd, 4th or 5th firmware then I would leave it aloneComment

here's an example, this drive when released had issues with dvd-r, liteon just
got it right after several updates
there are 7 firmwares listed
my benq did a good job with the 1st firmware, but I still have upgraded it twice

Sometimes, on occasion, the newest firmware isn't necessarily the best. A good example is the BenQ 1655. I had to revert backwards to an earlier firmware (BCDB) because the newer ones had bugs and issues. But I also did as Chewy did when I got my NEC 3550, I had the 1Y6 firmware ready and installed as soon as I installed the NEC, for bitsetting purposes mostly, but the firmware was good.
I also have a Sony DRU-810 that I have no intentions of updating the firmware for because it is a 'Beast' of a reader and I'd be a fool if I changed it for the sake of being up to date. No reasons to for this Sony.MBK
