Help! Dvd Burner... is it broken?

    Hi There,

My computer is under a year old and recently, after having worked properly since i purchased it and having burned a number of dvds in that time it started playing up. When i attempt to burn movies to a dvd using dvd shrink and/or nero it makes a grinding noise. Sometimes it doesn't make that noise but returns me a disc that has some information written on it but gaps in between. I am able to rip the information from an existing dvd with no problems and i am also able to burn to cds using the same driver with no problems whatsoever so i wonder if it is actually the driver or a setting that may be incorrect. My Pc is still under warranty but the only way tech support will help me is if i do a system restore to the original purchase package, which means i lose everything on the pc since then. Including about 60 gig of files i've personally created. When i asked them what i should do about this they said i need to back them up and when i asked how they said i can burn them to dvd. Yet there in lies the problem...

Does anyone have any theories on how to fix this problem or should i just purchase a new burner?

    Thanks.

if the 60 gig files are important then buy an external hard drive and back them up, then do a system restore reload and have them send you another burner, that one is probably toast?

The LG HL-DT-ST DVD +-RWGWA 4264b drive on my PC suddenly stopped recognising that the drive supports DVD immediately after updating Cineplayer as requested by Dell. The solution to the problem is that the firmware to support the DVD has "burn out" from dell engineer who tried to reload vererything form the intel chipset firmware down. The solution is to buy a new drive. I dont know if I believe this as it seemed to be to miuch of a coincidence that it happened immediately after the Cineplayer patch.

Any comments form any one else. This drive seems to be a load of rubbish.
