ISO Image Files In An External Hard Drive

Why do ISO Image Files fail in an external hard drive? I always get a message in the IMGBurn log mentioning something about Image Files won't work in my F-Drive. I tried it and there was no ISO Image File logo on the file. It was one of those strange files where a Choose Program box will appear if I double-click on it, the same strange type of file if you look at a Microsoft Works document file when Microsoft Works is currantly uninstalled. I'd like to use my F-Drive for storing ISO Image Files because my F-Drive is 160GBs and my C-Drive is only 76GBs.

What file format is your F: drive in? NTFS? or FAT32?

it's fat 32 from his imgburn logs

the drives come formatted fat32 so you can use them with windows 98

if you are sure you'll never need a 98 or ME computer to see the drive then
clean up your computer drive of all large temp video and back up anything on the external that can't be replaced easily

the safest way to convert the drive is in disk management

look up formatting disks in the xp help

My F-Drive is FAT32. My C-Drive handles ISO Image Files, fine and my C-Drive is NTFS. I bet FAT32 hard drives can't handle ISO Image Files?

I'll do that some time later when I've sorted out my DVDs. I have over 80GBs of AVI video files to sort out first. I can't do it tommorow or the day after ect because I have to back-up the data to my C-Drive and my remaining C-Drive disk space doesn't have enough for all that video.

By the way, how do I change my F-Drive from FAT32 to HTFS? I won't be needing Windows 98 or ME anymore.

Just one more question, is it wise to use the compress mode in the hard drives? I've been told by two people (not from the forum) that compressing the hard drives can cause problems.

Many thanks for the help. I won't be back on this for a while because as I said in my other post, I have a lot of video files to convert and compress to an ISO Image File. I use the DVD Shrink after converting AVI to the DVD files so that I can get the ISO Image File. It's a shame the converting software can't create an ISO Image File. The converting softwares that I use are VSO ConvertXtoDVD and VSO DivxToDVD.

I use VSO DivxToDVD when I'm putting one title on a disc because VSO DivxToDVD can't create menus and I might as well use that one for one title because it converts quicker.

There is a file size limit of 4gigs on a fat32 file system. The file will become corrupt and useless.
I had a 160Gig ext HDD and managed to get 50 gig on before I noticed. It said it was full!
2 to power 32= about 4 gig.

Yeah 4 gig it's limit for FAT32. You could convert your drive into NTFS, or use poweriso , to conver your iso's in multiple file less 4 Gb.

I just this minute converted my 160gb external hard drive to ntfs with no loss of files and it only took 2 to 3 minutes.

just go to the command prompt and enter - convert (drive letter): /fs:ntfs
