Who still use dialup ?

Just curious, does anyone like me still use dialup ?
I live in a remote area just north of Stockholm, Sweden and there is no broadband here whatsoever...and that is to bad.
Imagine, using 56k dialup today!!!!!
Well, i shall move soon to an area that has hi-speed broadband...but until then, pain pain pain pain.................

I still have dial-up in mid-Amercia USA, 56K modem, but actually runs at 28.8 best (even tweaked) you can get out of the copper lines with the telephone company central office 16 plus miles away.

Moving at the end of this year and will get what is called high speed internet. Three versions here basic, middle speed, and high speed. Basic is up to 150kb/sec at $14.95 per month, in order to get the very high speed you would need fiber optic cable from the telephone company central office to your house, including fiber optic cable into your house. Thats about 650kb/sec to 850kb/sec.

For me, when we went from dial-up to DSL, it was like night and day and I wondered how the hell can I get instantaneous page loading on DSL when I used to wait sometimes 30 seconds from dial-up??? They're both still coming from my telephone lines???

I'm hoping to try Clearwire with my laptop soon...

When they first rolled out dsl a friend found an apartment that overlooked the slick accross the street, he had to sign a lease and order phone service so it could be certified/checked. He told the apt manager he wouldn't move into a unit unless it tested 100%. Online UT gamer, then funny cause he found out the game server he was playing on was hosted in a university dorm 400 miles away and the other players lived in the dorm. Ping time killed him.

I've used Broadband for about four years and I'll never use Dial-up again. Some people still use Dial-up for a very good reason that I totally understand. Some people don't use the internet much and some only use the internet for e-mailing and surfing the odd web site here and there and they are patient enough to wait. They also feel that all the time they hardly use the internet, they find a Dial-up service cheaper where they pay something per minute instead of paying a Broadband monthly payment where a Broadband monthly payment will cost them more. As I said, some people are patient enough for a web page to download and patient enough to wait for an e-mail to send.

I use my internet a lot in the evenings sometimes and I need Broadband. I pay £24.99 a month for mine. With Dial-up, I used to get cheesed off getting cut off or getting an engaged tone when I wanted to log-in. Sometimes it was engaged so long I felt as if a wedding was coming. I do get the odd problems with my Broadband where the server is down for hours like two days ago but that only lasts for a few hours.

Sorry to read you don't have Broadband, that is strange. I hope your country gets it very soon. You'll love it. I feel bad for you and others that can't get it at the moment. This is news to me because I thought the whole world can get Broadband because it's common PC technology.

The $14.95 per month is from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company ordering thru the internet, and you do all the connecting and tweaking yourself, unlimited usage.

The only way to get high speed, was cable. I have been waiting over 10 years for DSL, I been told any day now. I'm still waiting. MY dial speeds if I was lucky on a good day would be 18,800Bps the rest of the time iwas stuck at 9600Bps.

Indeed! I remember my Quake-ing days playing multiplayer with 10 or more in the melee, 99 percent of the servers were on university multi-T3 systems with ultra-fast servers. It was the norm for a majority of players in residential areas that had nothing but dialup to experience considerable lattency problems.

It was a nightmare. When two or more players on the univeristy LAN came close to your position in the game, the lag would skyrocket! If they moved off to some other area in the level, the lag dropped back down and you could at least move a little bit.

It took learning the lattency timing, which varied of course, and knowing when to hit fire or run or duck in order to get a good game in. There were all kinds of lag monitor programs written by gamers to help with monitoring the lag times during gameplay. Some just had a numercial readout, others had a graph.

Sometimes it was quite funny to see another player fire at you, you attempt to move out of the way, only to see motion stop for a second or two, then poof!....your fragged!
