Not recognised as DVD drive - it says it's a CD Drive

I'll admit right off the bat I am kind of new at backing up my movies. I have only been doing it for about a year, first using dvdshrink and dvddecrypter then a friend turned me on to dvdclone and anydvd. My problem is, when trying to rip and burn All the Kings Men, I got errors and it failed, but now my computer no longer recognizes my DVD/RW, it sees it as a CD-rom. When I go to device manager it sees it as a DVD/rw but in explorer it shows up as a cd-rom and clone says I don't have a DVD/RW either. I have done the regedits on the upper and lower filters and removed all dvd burning software and reloaded. I have switched the DVD rom and DVD/rw. I have removed and uninstalled all burning software, all with no luck. Has this happened to anyone before? It happened to my husband when he tried to burn the movie for me but his drive magically reappeared the next day. I have a good 20 hours into this. I even plugged in an external USB DVD/RW drive and the system recognized it as a DVD/RW for about 5 minutes and then it changed to a cd. It must be software related but I cant figure it out. Please tell me I don't have to do a system restore back to the factory settings. getting rid of the bloatware that came with this thing takes days.

When I don't have a DVD in the drive, it says CD Drive on the desktop.

But it still recognises DVDs

Perhaps this is your issue?

I have a DVD-rw in the drive and when I try to use DVD Clone it will no longer burn straight to the DVD, it does not see the DVD it will only burn it to my harddrive. The when I try to burn the movie from my hard drive to my burner it says I don't have one. I even plugged in a USB external DVD drive and it became a CD. No program, nero, clone, shrink think I have a DVD rw and they don't see the USB external one either.
any ideas?

what does the nero info tool say about them?

its really crazy but I put a movie in and made it play via Nero and I only had to play if for about 10-15 seconds, pop it out and the computer recognized the drive as a DVD-RW. and now all is well again. Thanks for the link on the nerotool.
I will be spending alot of time in the near future reading this site. Thanks for your help.

Yeah that happens all the time. Sometimes one of my burners will have the name of the last movie until it gets refreshed or something else takes it's place,lol.
