Password protecting files?

Hey, I just bought my own domain [edit]
I put a CGI proxy on it so I could visit blocked sites like the forums from school. However, this is technically against their TOS, and the company said they'd only allow it if only I use it.

Since URLs spread really fast, I was wondering if anyone knows how to password protect a file so that people can't just stumble onto it.

Danny, I'm gunna delete the link as there is copyrighted material accessible there. I know you wanna password protect the stuff, but for the time being, your music, for example, needs to be kept to yourself.

I didn't have a chance to see your domain but I hope you setup a robot.txt file so your page doesn't end up getting index by google and other search engine.
If they get there spiders into your page you mite as well consider your page public domain.

I'm very hesitant to offer you help on these issues.

I have a 17 year old daughter that spends alot of time on her computer, and she is getting really involved in the subject.

Never once has she even put her own account on a password.

So, with all these threads you've had, relating to getting around this or that.. I tend to side with your parents. Afterall, you are their responsibility.
Once you move out, or start paying rent, then I'd say you'd have an argument, until then...Mom and Dad knows best.

I have the feeling like Danny will learn his lesson the hard way. One of these days he will find his computer doing things odd and won't be able to figure it out. It hard to figure out problems when the problems keep changing because somebody out in cyber space has more control of your computer than you do. It's called live and learn.

Aw, but asking here is so much easier than experimenting

If I password protect something in Windows, then upload it, will it still be protected on the server, or is additional protection needed?

Windows (up to XP) doesn't have any file/folder password protection other than user accounts/permissions. Currently the only way (without using another app) is to zip them, and yes it will still require a password for access no matter where it is.
