Why Do Some DVD Players Refuse To Play DVDs?

Are you refering to Freecom that might go out of business soon? If they do it won't be any skin off my nose because I'm losing all trust in them and their Firmware causes problems. One time I downloaded it in a Zip File and there was an error when I tried to unzip it, another time when I tried to download some it failed to download and the last time I managed to download and unzip it and it wouldn't install. I go thought Freecom DVD burners like a blow torch through butter and I had to buy more because the Firmware was no good in all kinds of ways.

My other DVD machine play all other DVD discs OK except for DVD-RAM because they are not DVD-RAM machines. However, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+RW discs are fine except my Sony machine only plays Region 0 in black-and-white. I know somebody else that has a Sony DVD player that can't play Region 0 in colour. I went through the settings in my Sony and his and nothing helped. It's the way Sony make them.

It's interesting you mentioned 8x because I have some DVD Samsung DVD-R that go as high as 8x and other DVD discs I buy go as high as 16x. I did think the discs were the cause of things at one time because I thought I should use 16x but the discs are not made for that speed.

Welcome to my world, my Toshiba isnt playing anything new very well either.

While the same back ups play just fine on some other player and not on picky ones toshibas are known to be a lot more picky then most I have been seeing more and more posts though of other players not wanting to play right.


Some want to blame media, some want to blame burners or burn speeds and in some cases that may hold true.

but when you using a awesome burner and TYG02 discs and quality scans are all 97 to 99 well its the players.

Some just dont want to play the new stuff. I am getting rid of my toshiba and going with somthing that will play everything.

But there was someone that made a good point when it comes to stand alone players and that is there is no firmware updates for stand alone players at least not for most of them. Media keeps changing and more important the copy encryptions keep changing on us all the time. It seems that its getting to the point of having to buy a new player ever few months just to be able to keep playing the back ups.

I personally think these players are made to fail out at some point just so we have to go out and buy a new one even though the one we have is just fine for older movies.

Trust me I feel your pain much more then you know.

The DVD player that I have problems with is my Pioneer player. I know some others that have the same problems with their Pioneer players, too.

The medias and speeds etc can causes these problems at times but now it seems some players are sensitive and I'm going to ask Sony why their DVD players and DVD recorders can't handle Region 0 in colour. I mentioned the Region 0 bit even though I have a few times in other posts in this thread encase anyone gets black-and-white playbacks and wonders why. That is the machine for a fact.

When you mentioned about you're getting rid of your Toshiba, I was thinking the other day about buying a new DVD player to replace my Pioneer. I'm still keeping the Pioneer nut I'm going to pack it away. I want to buy another to replace that one because it's my Multi-Region player. I have another Multi-Region one that's a little bit bigger than a DVD burner and I paid £24.99 for it and the stupid machine lags during playback. The picture slightly jolts as if it's trying to play a little slower and as if it's trying to play in slow-motion.

The bit you mentioned about the changes of copyright protection, I also get my problems with home-movies and downloaded movies.

You have a good point. For all we know there might be something built into some machines where copied DVDs can cause some damage to the players to stop us copying the DVDs. It's like the issue on a boot disc for PS2 games that are copied, I was told ages ago the boot discs can damage the laser in the console.
