I don't believe FF & plugins were fully installed, anony. I ran it again & here is where things end up. Don't know what to do from here. If I just close the window, when I open ff again, it says; ,

anony - for whatever reason, Tilde works now for the terminal window (don't ask me)

Still can't get the ff issue resolved. Looking around on the linux forums for threads...

When you see the license agreement, hit Tab in order to select OK.

Probably needed to restart X for it to take effect.

It worked! It took longer for it to load at first, but sucessive loads seem ok now. Flash is working on websites.

I was curious about installing many of these pgms. that are in the Synaptic Package Manager. I just checked my root drive, (15 gb part.) & I am already at almost 4 gb. used. I guess I am supposed to be installing these programs unto another partition?

I also noticed that only 1 of my dvd drives is showing up in computer? (I have 2 in the system). And, it also shows a floppy drive, but none is connected.

          you're the man!

Only 3.8GB used here; the apps are being installed in root, as they should be.

They are both detected and mounted properly, according to your /etc/fstab. What happens if you insert a disc?

And, it also shows a floppy drive, but none is connected.
Did you have a floppy drive during installation? In any case, to get rid of it just open up fstab, remove the last line, save and reboot.

They are both detected and mounted properly, according to your /etc/fstab. To double-check, go to Places-->Computer. You should see all your drives whether they contain media or not.
I don't have a disc in either drive. Only 1 is showing in Places>Computer. Funny - I put an audio cd in each drive, & both play using Sound juicer.

But still, only 1 drive shows up there? When I clicked eject after putting the cd in each drive one at a time, listening to it, then eject & placed in 2nd drive. Eject command works for both physical drives, altho only 1 is showing up...

No floppy has ever been connected to this pc.

Post your fstab, perhaps something something has changed. The drive is detected and I'm sure you'll see both "cdrom" devices under /media, seems just the link is missing.

anony - you listed the "~" as a keyboard shortcut to bring up a terminal window. Where can I find a list of shortcuts like that? Is that something that you put in there yourself?

I did find some of these in Beryl Settings Manager - is that where all are located - easily changed? I see many are disabled.

Is there a shortcut to bring up the shutdown/restart/etc. window?
I am familiar with many windows shortcuts, but some are a bit different in linux?

I know, I can't leave well enough alone - tweak time!

~ Was set up in my config only, not by default. You can change keyboard shortcuts in the Preferences menu, but if you have Beryl running they probably won't work since it overrides them. You'll need to use beryl-settings to set up your own. In the meantime, here are a few you may or may not have discovered:

Ctrl+Alt+Left click : Free rotation of the cube

Middle click (on the desktop): Same as above

Move the moust pointer to the top-left of the screen: Scale. One of the main reasons for using Beryl. Have a few windows open to see the effect.

                      Ctrl+Alt+L: Lock screen

Ctrl+Alt+Backspace: Restart X. Almost the equivalent of restarting a Windows PC, but in a small fraction of the time.

I know, I can't leave well enough alone - tweak time!
For a quick tweak that will let Beryl run smoother, run:

                      Code:
                      gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
                      and paste its contents.

                      Nice av BTW.

I keep hitting a key combo, I forget it exactly now - But something like Ctrl-Alt- something? & it takes me to a "Dos" type screen that shows $desktop. I don't know what I am doing in there, & I have to press the reset button to reboot the pc.
Do you know what that is?

                          Could it be Ctrl+Alt+F1?

It is Linux without a GUI (X11), ie the terminal.

To get back to the GUI, type

                          Code:
                          startx
                          or to reboot, type

                          Code:
                          sudo reboot

Going to install mail pgm. You mentioned Thunderbird; what is wrong with using Evolution, which is already installed?

In Thunderbird, what are all those "transition package/region package etc., Gecko Library? How do I determine what all I need to select for install?

I see that for many pgms. in there, many additional files, & I am not sure what all I need to add, although I have noticed that some installs do tell you it will select additional need components automatically.

                            Java (search for sun-java6-jre)
I have java 5.0 32 bit. installed. Is that what I need, since I am running 32 bit browser, or do I need to upgrade to 6?

                            Glad you like the av

Just a matter of taste, I prefer the look & feel of Thunderbird. 2.0 was released shortly before Feisty so it did not make it in the repos. For an easy install get the installation script here.

Do not add anything manually, Synaptic will automatically mark every package you need (AKA "dependencies") to be installed.

Did you see my edit above about the java?

Also, I installed most of the pgms. you mentioned on pg. 5 (post 85).

Do you want to recommend any more that a newb. like me might like? What about any linux games? And, will run with linux ok? I did find this thread.
