Did that; same results as post 283...sorry, I am trying!

I tried to screen capture with the playback/record tabs expanded, but I can't capture? when I click the dropdown menu...
OSS is listed there, & alsa >
HDA VIA VT 82 xx:ALC861 Analog (hw:0.0)
Alsa front
Alsa Surround 4.0
5.1
7.1
I have researched this & tried every setting I know how to, & as I mentioned, I can't get a stream capture with any of the audio edit pgms... Hopefully you will see something there...

At this point I am unsure whether it is a driver problem or just an Audacity (and GNUSound?) quirk (the error message is common, even on Macs). Not exactly a solution, but does Sound Recorder work? Menu->Sound & Video
There is also mplayer which should be able to dump just about any stream losslessly. Run a terminal, enter
Code:mplayer 'http://www.the.url/of/the/stream' -dumpstream -dumpfile '/path/to/output.mp3'

What happened then was that it recorded very distorted & intermittently. It was after that episode that my sound was "broken" & all my files were distorted. after a couple of cold boots that returned to "normal" though...
So at this point I do have clear audio, although not being able to record. From my windows/pc experience I was thinking that it is a driver prob./conflict of some kind, since I cannot get ANY audio editor to work at all.
There is also mplayer which should be able to dump just about any stream losslessly.
As my knowledge of this OS continues to grow, hopefully I will come across the solution; at this point it is frustrating though, since everything looks "correct" as far as the places that I know where to look. (settings/preferences,etc.)
Unless there are system logs somewhere that would tell more of a story, I don't know...Comment

It looks very much like a driver issue, although a few posts on the forums suggest things had worked with the previous release. What advanced users would do in this case is compile and update the kernel, but it is probably something beginners should steer clear of unless they're feeling brave & adventurous.
In your case I would recommend just using mplayer (I would always recommend it over recording/encoding anyway, even if it worked flawlessly on your system). Unfortunately, I'm otherwise out of ideas, you have encountered a nasty bug.Last edited by anonymez; 19 Jun 2007, 08:45 PM.Comment

So you're saying that this is a "system specific" problem, such as related to my hardware setup?
I'll check launchpad to see if anyone else is experiencing this.Comment

Anything that involves replacing hardware is not a solution IMO, more of a workaround. But it just might work if you have a spare. Chances are this will be fixed in Gutsy-- new & updated kernel, GNOME, Xorg, etc included.
I'll be carefully selecting the parts for my next build to make sure they're compatible. BTW, I'm surprised you're hanging in there; can't let go of Beryl, eh?
BTW if you don't mind a bit of bleeding edge compositing goodness, you might like to take a look at Compiz and Compiz Fusion (the "new" names after the Beryl & Compiz merge). Running it now; smoother, faster, more stable (than Beryl) and some fantastic new features.Last edited by anonymez; 22 Jun 2007, 10:00 PM.Comment
