    Reboot - is working now

Now, I have another oddity! Previously, the "taskbar area was visible above my browser. Now, when I open the browser, it only opens in 1/2 of the screen. I cannot manipulate it in any way with any buttons in the RH corner, I have to hit f11 to maximize it.

When I do that, I cannot view the taskbar? Did I do something else here to goof things up?

Did you install the nvidia drivers yet?

Hit Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and log in again.

something definantly wrong - I actually have to close the browser window completely to get to the desktop to do anything at all.

Also, when I open any type of window, terminal, etc., it opens up in the upper left corner & I cannot move it as before.

Restricted nvidia drivers are installed, all software updates are installed. Rebooted, no change.

Is there a "system restore" in ubuntu? I think I need it

Windows sticking to the top-left indicates a window manager isn't running (for some odd reason, perhaps to do with the updates?). Run a terminal, try typing

            Code:

That looks like it has fixed all my problems. Is that something I did, turning it off? I forgot to mention that it did pop up a window saying that it wasn't running.

Probably not, but be wary of installing all offered updates. Had you installed Beryl or enabled Desktop Effects?

Not yet. That was going to be next on the list, as well as some type of email client. And, some more of the games. I am a "mild" gamer. No counter-strike here (you'd have to talk to my son for that one)

I am liking Mahjongg, sameGnome, & Tetravex. My fastest time on that last one was 22 seconds!

Make sure to have one or the other, you don't want to enable both! Desktop Effects (Compiz) is easier to enable, but Beryl has more features, customizeable and faster (at least on my system).

Nothing but glchess and Mahjongg here

Is that kind of like a crap shot, like in windows? I was figuring I should take all that they offered, being linux & all, I thought it would be a good idea.

Is there a way to remove updates? Where is the control panel, as in windows? what about a system restore, or rolling the system back a day or so? Are these things possible?

EDIT - I am really rusty on my chess, I need to brush up on it!

It is safe on the whole, but occasionally you might get an update that will cause a few quirks. If anything might cause issues it would be kernel updates, but like the Live CD you can try them out via the boot menu before committing.

I'm sure there is a way, I just don't know it LOL. Never had to do it.

AFAIK there is no such function yet. There are a bunch of backup/restore tools available though.

I need to connect a couple of IDE drives to pull data off of them, editing, etc. Will they be recognized when I boot, I assume in places>computer? I will be able to access them, without doing anything?

@ regarding post #74; Using rdesktop / virtual machine, is it possible to run games lile my son wants to? (counter-strike/halo,sims, etc.) Are they considered windows apps? I know you mentioned before about wine...

Shouldn't be any problems, drives should be detected and automatically mounted.

No good for gaming, the best chance you have of playing Windows games is with Wine (free, open source) or Cedega (commercial, subscription based). Performance in most cases is noticeably less than under Windows.

Due to what? Performance less in what way? Slow, jerky, lag, or bad graphics for example?

Any of the above, with crashes/glitches. Counter-Strike Source is one of the games that runs perfectly; though I haven't gone to the trouble to try it myself.
