Java installation via the script was optional. You shouldn't have any issues with 5.0 but if you want 6.0, bring up a terminal, type:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove --purge sun-java5-jre
    then

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre
Or just do it through Synaptic.

Do you want to recommend any more that a newb. like me might like?
Off the top of my head,

    - Beagle

    - gnome-main-menu is a must. If you like what you see, don't use Synaptic. Instead politely ask me to upload a more recent build.

    - wxDFast with the Flashgot Firefox extension. Edit: see this thread.

    For burning, GnomeBaker or K3b

For easily encoding various formats --> DVD, DeVeDe

Also Avidemux, mplayer (or VLC) and ffmpeg.

And, will Nero run with linux?
Nero Platinum - 7 programmes en une suite ! ✓ Montage vidéo ✓ Streaming ✓ Sécurité des données ✓ Conversion ✓ Gravure ✓ Radio mondiale ► Plus d'informations

    What about any linux games?
My gaming in Linux is limited to glchess & Mahjongg. There are a bunch of sites that list/rate/review open source games.

IIRC, you mentioned previously that one does not need an anti-virus program w/ linux? Is that correct? if so, what happens if I download an infected file?

Nothing will happen. Feel free to open any suspicious Emails/attachments.

I remember someone tried to run a Windows virus in Linux with Wine, IIRC he needed to re-install Wine afterwards.

Thunderbird installed, working great on 2 accounts. (Comcast) Is it possible to check web based email thru Thunderbird, for ex. Yahoo & Netscape?

Your mail provider would need to support it. Gmail provides free POP3 access (the only one that does, I think), while with Yahoo (IIRC) you have to pay for it. Not sure about Netscape.

Ok, that is exactly the same thing I heard a year or so ago; I was hoping that maybe they changed things, or possibly some "techy" found a backdoor way of making it work!

Installed my Epson r220 printer, printed a test page just fine w/ colors/text. I am trying to print a text file that I typed up, but when I click "print", nothing happens?

EDIT - Nevermind! I got this one fixed too. Seems when I clicked "print", the printer wasn't selected, rather "Generic Postscript"

anony - printer seems to work fine; however, I need to use "Print Cd" which is on the driver disc that linux doesn't recognize, I know.

there are apps like VMware and QEMU, both free, the latter open source, that will run Windows on top of Linux.
Would this be my best bet in this case? QEMU looks to be a better choice, but of course, I am very foggy on this, even after reading up on wiki!

Found this thread, should work with your printer.

The best in your case would be either VirtualBox or VMware. VirtualBox is easily installed, doesn't have dynamic memory allocation (so will "reserve" whatever amount of ram you set), easy folder sharing between host and guest. VMware Server is a little trickier to install (does not work with the latest Linux kernels, need to run a patch first), has dynamic memory allocation, and does not support folder sharing (most people use samba as a work-around).

Installed TOR as per these instructions.
                      Install the torbutton extension
Did that too, but when I run ifconfig in a terminal window with Tor disabled/enabled, the IP address shows no difference. Is it working or not?

Oops, didn't seem to get an Email notification for this thread.

Networking isn't my forte (nor have I used Tor), but I'm not sure whether your IP should change in ifconfig. Maybe check it this way.

With a user name like yours, I was certain you would surf "anonymously"! Do you use/recommend another anonymous method?

Funny thing; with Tor enabled (you can disable it easily), I cannot login to my bank website.

Side note; I just discovered the "mouse into the upper left-hand corner", to display all windows on screen at once & easily select which one you want - now that is convenience!

LOL, not much of a priority for me. Who would bother tracking me down?

A few years ago I used a little freeware Windows app, and I don't know why I'm posting this because I cannot recall the name or whether it actually worked.

Tried your IP link & also grc.com (shields up). They both give the same ip address & also list comcast as my provider, but the ip # they list is not the same as what I get with ifconfig.

Also, with Tor enabled/disabled, I still get the same ip# from those websites. I will investigate further.

Uncas, do you know anything about this?

Move the moust pointer to the top-left of the screen: Scale. One of the main reasons for using Beryl. Have a few windows open to see the effect.
