nLite is a great program - slipstream install your OS!

Thought I would start a thread on this neat *free* program I was recently made aware of - Thanks anony & Chewy!

nLite will automate the slipstream cd creation process, much easier method than start/run/cmd !

You are able to strip out unwanted componants of the install. Nothing like a 10 minute unattended re-install of the OS!

nLite supports Windows 2000, XP x86/x64 and 2003 x86/x64 in all languages.
It needs .NET Framework 2.0 in order to run
    Features
    • Service Pack Integration
    • Component Removal
    • Unattended Setup
    • Driver Integration *
    • Hotfixes Integration **
    • Tweaks
    • Services Configuration
    • Patches ***
    • Bootable ISO creation
    Enjoy!

If you are using Internet Explorer, run Windows Update and look for the updates. Then download the actuall file by searching for it within Microsoft's website
this is totally useless since there are over 60 critical updates since xp sp2

many of the non-critical ones are needed also depending upon someones
    applications etc

if you have a good broadband it's better to just do the autoupdate from Microsoft but always pick and choose optional/non-critical components

if you think you might have to reinstall windows often or have a slower internet connection then autopatcher is a good option, just don't try to download it's components on dialup(go to a friends)

Good point! I feel the best way to go about it is to simply Slipstream XP, & SP2, as you had mentioned previously in the another thread. Even including drivers, antivirus, etc., while it seems like a good idea, in the long run is not, since you will have several updates in the meantime, not to mention possible hardware changes.

Chewy - for creating a slipstream cd for a pc that requires the "f6/3rd party driver; You include that driver at the section of the program where you select drivers, patches, etc.?

I am guessing that the install would work when doing it like this. I was just curious, since I have to load that one from the floppy during windows install.

              that's my next project

SP3 for Windows XP Professional is currently planned for 1H CY2008. This date is preliminary.
if vista sales lag then preliminary means at MS's discretion

My next little project will be creating a stripped down, light version of XP SP2 and running it alongside Ubuntu via VMware. Though still no good for gaming, there are three or four Windows apps I use that are simply the best at what they do.

I use them often enough to warrant this I think... should be able to run it fullscreen on one workspace.
