    New hard drive problem

I have a pc which has 2 Seagate drives. I have another hd coming so I decided to make the larger of the 2 drives the main so when the other drive comes, I'll set that one as slave. I used the Seagate install disc to copy one drive to the other. Took over 4 hours. Both drives have the jumpers set to cable select. I switched the cables and when I start the pc, I get a error loading os. What did I do wrong?

I usually use master/slave setup all my drives instead of cable select.

Please disconnect the cable from the old (smaller) drive, set the new (large) drive as master, and then boot it up to see your PC can load the OS from the new drive. If it doesn't then the Seagate install disc didn't do its job. If it does boot up, then just set the old drive as slave, connect to PC, format and partition if needed

    Regards

did you make the new OS drive's partition active?

windows won't boot unless it's active

I tried changing the jumpers with no luck.
How do you make the new OS's partition active?

          disk management

with old drive running the OS, rightclick on the new drive/mark partition as active

power down and switch out drives

been there and done it myself, like to never figured out what was wrong

hate to admit how many times I started over and reloaded from scratch

I did that and when I restart it goes to the Windows XP screen and sits there. Maybe the Seagate install disc is not copying the files correctly?

it may have glitched being on the same cable and taking four hours

              kind of weird

did you try the new drive all by itself as standalone master?

Yes I did. That's when it goes to the Windows screen and just sits there. Running a scandisk on it now. Don't know if it will help. Maybe I need to use other software.

Yes. I even tried the Disk Wizard for windows. That didn't work at all so that's wnen I tried the disc that came with the drive.

have you ever used drive overlay software on the old drive?

                          No.
I'm thinking of trying the trial version of Acronis Migrate Easy 7.0.

I would try with the drives on seperate cables, both 80 conductor

Well the trial version of Acronis Migrate Easy worked! It only took a half hour. I guess that Seagate software was the problem. Thank you so much for your help.
