Get Explorer to Remember Window Position

Vista didn't seem to want to relinquish control over where a window would be positioned when opened. I googled trying to find a solution and the advice was to hold down the Control Key while clicking the Close Button. Windows would then remember the window size and position.

That didn't work for me but just for chuckles I tried holding down the Left Alt Key while using the Close Button... Bingo!!. I tried it on Explorer Folders and also programs that open in a Normal Window. So far so good!! I have an HP Pavilion with Vista Home Premium in case it makes any difference.

So if this has been bugging you try the Left Alt Key and see if it works on
your PC also.

What a piece of junk Vista is turning out to be. You might like to try autosizer, a freeware prog that sizes and places stuff where you want, aqccording to class and titlebar. (Google it).

Thanks for the heads up on the freeware. AFA Vista, oh I dunno'. It reminds me a lot of when XP came out. It was too much of a resource hog to upgrade any of the PCs I had running Win9x. So I waited to get a PC with XP preinstalled. All the settings were in different places and I had to search around(think I was using AltaVista then instead of google) to find out how to turn annoying services off, change UI settings etc.. to optimize it.

Pretty much same as Vista except they added some more stuff like setting up the defragger on a scheduler etc... I think the main problem with doing stuff they think you'll want is that they check your PC "idle state" by CPU usage. Of course if you are doing something disk intensive that's not CPU intensive, like burning a DVD, then the stupid defrag has no compunction about kicking in right then. Also when I was using the 3rd party defragger, mobsync.exe would pop up in the middle of a defrag to index some files.
If they are going to schedule stuff during "idle times" then they should really find out if the machine is idle before launching.





But I do like the user interface and the file drag & drop over my Lan works much better. So it's not all bad for sure.

btw blutach I'm gonna' give autosizer a try. Just downloaded it. The trick of holding the Alt key when closing only seems to work for a while. I think Explorer just remembers it until you open x amount of folders, then it forgets again.

Yeah, something to do with the ShellIconCache, I think (which you can increase with a reg hack).

My Early Take On Vista

It's not so much that the OS is bad, it is that Microsoft has decided to change how things work - often for the worse. For example, play any of the MS games and you will be frustrated by how SLOW they have programmed the newer versions of the games. I used to be able to play a QUICK game of Hearts in a few minutes while waiting for a download but because of the delays (not animation) now built into the game it takes 10 to 15 minutes to play a game.

The control panel is another example. After a while you learn that it's basically the SOS rearranged. Does anyone at MS think creatively? For example, why isn't the Control Panel just one big electronic book that you open up lke a PDF file with a table of contents, an index, and a built-in search feature? Think of each icon in the control panel window as a chapter in the book. Sometimes you have to adjust things that you would expect to find in the control panel by right clicking on the Computer icon on the desktop (AKA the icon formerly known as My Computer). Shouldn't that stuff be in the big book?

Also, I found I could run a program I developed with Visual Basic 5.0 Controls Creation Edition (MS freeware) under Vista only after copying an appropriate OCX from my XP system into the program's directory. VB5CCE installs just fine. The reason my VB program wouldn't run under Vista right out of the box is MS made a conscious decision NOT to ship all of the OCXs from XP for THEIR interface objects even though they tested them and found them to be compatible with Vista!

After first day I had Vista on a new laptop, I tired of the animations and curvy styles Vista applies by default to all of the windows and dialog boxes. I made my system look as close to XP as possible.

One more thing, the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer has been replaced by Windows Photo Gallery which choked on a 2 MB multi-page TIF file I had scanned. I mean CHOKED. It consumed all the physical memory on a 1 GB RAM system and the system CRAWLED as the disk thrashed away. The same file loaded without sweat under the Picture and Fax Viewer on XP.
