Noticed that you can upgrade and get the 64 bit version of Vista more or less free from Microsoft if you want that in the future. Only shipping costs added.

Used the original fan that was shipped with the CPU and according to Speedfan - the CPU temp never goes higher than 49 C during a run with DVD Rebuilder.

Hmmmmm don't know how true it is but I seem to remember seeing on a forum somewhere that a guy with a 64 bit machine got the Vista 64 upgrade but it
nuked his right to use the 32 bit pre-installed Vista. So when stuff didn't work he couldn't go back. Sorry I can't recall the site and it might just be rumor but I'd google before installing just to be on the safe side.

Can very well be true as I guess M$ blocks the old product key when you get the 64 bit version.

Motherboard: 46 C, can only see core 1 and that one is up to 54 C as highest.

ambient? Well, the weather is "watercooled" and 16 C.

                ambient is room temperature

                for accurate core temps

                motherboard temp seems high?

                everest ultimate?

it's cooled down today, only 32c outside

Yeah the B stepping Quads are actually 62 Deg c (Max cores) and the G0 stepping Quads are 71C (Max cores)
Dee(of Liggy &) also thought the B stepping was 72

                    stock coolers are bad news

                      From the same thread:

I've heard the quads are safe upto 95c core temps,
                      Still some margins left.

I would rather be a "mother hen" with my advise, Intel has already clocked those cores down to avoid overheating, they know it would be a public relations disaster if they started burning up after they sold the first ones for 800-1000$.

I am afraid Dee is wrong, it might take months rather than weeks to fry at those temps (95C), but they will fry.

@ Cynthia I was just wondering how your new processor is doing? Are you still running the stock Heat sink?

Being everyone had a love fest for AMD in the past, I was wondering if they offer quadcore? If so how are they compared to Intel?

the future roadmap for amd is a complicated one, instead of glueing 2 dual cores together and calling it a quad core, they are actually attempting getting all 4 cores integrated, there are obvious advantages to this, but it's very challenging

the amd64 platform put them ahead but intel finally scrapped their old platform and designed a superior product(about time) core2duo

Intel has had the quad-core space to itself for 271 straight days. Not anymore.

"Those who have waited for the arrival of AMD's next generation CPU won't be disappointed."

What's more, the thermal load of the quad core CPU is roughly the same as the dual core Opteron, that means the same heat sinks and cooling fans can be used,
the next few weeks should be very enlightening, as amd's past attempt at quad core, basically a 2 socket linking of dual core, was a dismal failure
