DVDRW problems

Hi Guys,

I've been lurking in here for a while and have found the many different sections very helpful and informative, especially when I've encountered problems with my PC.

However, I've had a dig round and haven't found a remedy to my latest problem ....... whenever I close the drawer on either one of my CD/DVDRW's with a disc inserted, my PC shuts down and resarts. Sometimes it gets itself into a vicious circle of starting then shutting down and will only start if I remove the disc.

Ive tried reinstalling Windows and Nero just in case there was a corrupted file but to no avail.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong and a possible remedy ?

You don't say what flavor of Windows you're using. If you have TweakUI for it then
look through the settings for "Auto Play" and "Auto Insert Notification" and turn them all off.
Also there should be a setting to "reboot on fatal error" or something like that. If you don't
have TweakUI just google for the settings for whatever Windows you have. Once you get the PC to stop booting you'll have a better chance to find out the problem.

Sorry, I forgot to mention it's XP Home I'm using and I don't have TweakUI

The strange thing is that sometimes the PC does read the CD/DVD without shutting the machine off, but there appears to be no rhyme or reason as to when it does this.

When the problem first started, I thought it was my burner starting to show signs of old age so I bought another. When the problem continued I then replaced the IDE cable - 80 core - but there was no change. Then I started removing any programs I suspected of possibly causing problems but it made no difference. Finally I re-installed XP and did a Nero repair install. Still the problem persists.

It had been suggested that I might have some sort of virus or that my Norton security suite may have corrupted the programs, as I re-installed them without disabling the virus checker. I've checked the for viruses and spyware but have found none.

Back to the drawing board then.

The first thing that comes to mind is if you are using Nero InCD then uninstall it. If not
try uninstalling Nero completely and see if Imgburn will work. In any case the first bridge to cross is Hardware or Software(tm). Until you can isolate it to one or the other there's no methodical approach possible.

I still have Nero 6603 on my XP machine with no InCD. Any update after that would hose
my registry settings and I'd have to uninstall/reinstall so after a while as stubborn as I am, even I quit trying to update past that version.

I finally lost the plot/gave up trying to sort it myself yesterday and dropped it into my local PC shop. This was where I originally bought the machine from.

They've had a load of the same problem as of late, so thankfully knew exactly what was causing the problem.

It turned out to be the software from my ISP that came bundled with Norton. They've removed all the offending items and now everything is ok

They have said there are similar problems with both the Bt Total Broadband Home Hub and with Virgin Media software.

Glad you got it working. Prolly the most frustrating situation other than a machine that won't light up at all is one that keeps rebooting. It will drive you nuts!

Check the jumpers on the back of the drives and make sure one is set to master and the other to slave.
