I gave a friend a link to this. Now I don't know how many posts came after he read it, but he just sent me this.

could be a problem with his mem timings > if his machine will do it > tell hime to set it at 3,3,3,>10 2T command rate & 2.7v

i'd be looking closer at the hdd, les.
if you've moved your pc recently, i'd just losen the hdd/case screws & re-do them again (new or stressed position could be causing the problem). let's hope it's as simple as that
in any case, check your hdd thoroughly 1st.

Yeah, I'm thinking of the HDD, too, Mentor.

soup, those timings are lower than the SPD ones (the ones with failsafe defaults).

Gunna do an ORTHOS test now and see how we go.

Well, after 3 hours (almost) of ORTHOS testing (yes, I know, I should stress the system for 12 hours), it never missed a beat. So, CPU/memory are just fine at the settings I am at.

Back to a driver. Maybe SPTD.sys

Yes, I recently installed the logitech webcam. Wonder if that could be the issue. Not sure of the SPTD.sys version as it doesn't seem to report it.

DTools is 4.03HE

PC perferms flawlessly (when it boots). It's gotta be the DT/NV/Logitech driver combo I reckon.

from what I read the DT with the nvidia drivers is a little unstable, add ncq and then the web cam and all hell breaks loose

some fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling DT from safe mode?

Well, it ain't the machine after it boots. I just did a heavy re-encode from a source I took while away and the machine performed flawlessly. CPU never got above 52C, MB never above 36C.

So, maybe I uninstall some stuff and keep sniffing around. Or just keep the machine on

I had a similar issue with Vista. Installed some languagepacks that showed up in Windows Update and it "froze" every time after the BIOS check for 35-40 minutes before it launched Windows. After the removal of those updates - the start up is back to normal.

The last couple of boots have been OK.

Against my better judgement, I ran Registry Mechanic, which seemed to do no damage at least

Monitoring the issue and will respond.

I wanted to get back to folks about this one. It seems the PC most of the time does not like my Logitech webcam. Removing it makes the PC boot every time. Now on the rare occasions I webcam (and who the heck would wanna see my ugluy mug, anyway?), I simply plug it into an already booted system.

Thanks to all for their suggestions. And no, don't ask to webcam me!
