Changing A Hard Drive To Another Letter

One of my external hard drives was my I-Drive and this morning I booted up and I forgot to turn my external hard drives on first as I usually do. Because of this my I-Drive has changed to the J-Drive and I never had a J-Drive before. Now I can't run some of my games because I installed them them to my I-Drive. I still have the same hard drive plugged in but my computer can't run those games anymore because its searching for the I-Drive that's the J-Drive now and it has a broken connection. I keep getting no image on the shortcut icons on my desktop and the same with the icons under All Programs. Also, when I try to run a game to play it I get the message that has OK and Browse. I tried to uninstall the games and re-install then and I can't because my PC still tries to reach into the I-Drive and it can't because I don't have that location anymore. Is there a way to change my J-Drive back to the I-Drive? There's no use me using System Restore or Norton Go Back because this started about eight hours ago and I just noticed this problem and I've saved a lot since I booted up and I can't back everything up because I can't remember everything that I saved to put them back because System Restore or Norton Go Back will remove them.

    Many thanks.

    Darren.

don't make it harder than it already is

you might have to play musical drives but right click on my computer/manage/disk management

    reassign drive letters there

you will have to free up the letter you want first then assign the drive you want to have it

Many thanks for the info. I found where you mentioned but I can't change the drive back to the J-Drive back to the I-Drive. About a week after I started using this PC, I noticed another drive appeared as a CD Drive. That was my J-Drive and now it's my I-Drive. When I went to Computer Management it's listed as the M-Drive but it's still the I-Drive under My Computer. I found out how to change the drive letters but the I-Drive is unavailable because the CD Drive is hogging the letter. I thought of changing the I-Drive to something else to make the I-Drive free for me to change the J-Drive to the I-Drive. As I said, that drive is listed as the M-Drive under Computer Management and when I was about to ange the drive letter there was a warning about things not running properly if I continue. Anyway, I don't even know why I have that CD Drive listed because I don't have a CD-ROM or a CD burner.

      Many thanks.

      Darren.

I attached an image so that you can see what the properties says. When I click on that drive it asks me to enter a disc and I don't even have that hard ware to put the disc in. That image is called CD Drive Properties.

I also attached two other images so that you can see the layout in My Computer and Computer Management. Notice the mystery CD Drive is the I-Drive under My Computer and it isn't shown under Computer Managment. I thought it was at first but it isn't after all. That drive is acting like a spook haunting my PC and confusing me at the same time.

By the way, I have revealed everything in Computer Management so I haven't hidden anything by accident.

          Many thanks.

This is what I was saying in my other message. The I-Drive isn't listed in there, it's only listed in My Computer. If you look at the two images again you'll see what I mean. One is called My Computer and the other is called Computer Management. All the time isn't not there I can't delete it unless it's a hidden drive in there.

              Many thanks.

it's just about got to be some virtual drive, what software do you have installed that would account for it?

I'm not sure because the drive came out of nowhere and I can't remember the date when I first spotted it. Even if I did I would find it hard to remember what software that I installed just before it happened. Is there any way of finding out?

If only I remembered to turn my external hard drives on before booting up, this might not have happened because I believe it was when I turned them on when my PC was already on that shifted the hard drive to where that other drive was.

I thought of using Norton Go Back on that drive that I don't want but there's no Reversion tab with it. If there was, I could run that drive through Norton Go Back on its own so that the rest of my PC isn't reversed. I don't know if it's possible to reverse a single item through System Restore without anything else being reversed.

                  Many thanks.

                  Darren.

that phantom drive should show up in startup somewhere, task manager, msconfig or
                    services

I was thinking. I have a feeling I know what caused that strange driver. I think Roxio has because I just remembered with my otr PC that I used Roxio with, when I right-clicked on something there was a CD Drive listed but not in My Computer. With Roxio in that PC, it also listed my DVD-ROM and DVD burner but that CD Drive was acting like a fake drive in a way. I'm going to get rid of Roxio, reboot and see if that drive goes with it. I can't try now because I'm not at home at the moment.

If I can get rid of that drive and manage to turn my J-Drive back to the I-Drive the way it was, I hope my games are re-connected because sometimes when a connection is broken from a location they don't always function when they are put back because of modifications causing problems.

                      Many thanks.

                      Darren.

                        Chewy.

As I mentioned in my previous message, I suspected Roxio caused that strange drive listed. I uninstalled Roxio as I said and that drive was still there even after a reboot.

I'll have to leave it alone because I've got no idea what else to do but I managed to re-connect my games. I didn't think of this at first and I tried this and it worked. When I tried to run a game, I got that message with OK and Browse. I clicked on Browse and re-connected each game through that and they run now. That was the reason why I wanted to get that hard drive back to the letter I but it doesn't matter about it being a J-Drive now.

Many thanks for your help as well.
