Why Do My Clips Use So Much Space?

I hope I'm not breaking rule 19 asking this.

I use Max DVD To AVI Converter to convert to AVI so that I can edit my footage and I want to make clips to upload to friends. I don't know why, a clip at the duration of 1 minute and 44 seconds is always using 744MB's. I have a rough idea what causes this but when I chose a setting before converting it keeps going to MPEG4 again. The sound also has a horrible sound as if I played it back on my DVD player and filmed it off my TV with a camcorder. It's like making a home-movie and hearing the TV in the background. It never did that before. A lot of the problems occur at random without adjusting anything.

These AVI converts are always awkward because sometimes I get picture with no sound, bad picture with sound or picture and sound where the screen is on the wrong format where people's faces are oval-shaped as if it's trying to make a full-framed recording look like the 1:85 wide screen format. Some times the screen is the shape of a door. That happens with other software even when I put the screen setting correctly but they don't obey. Anyway, my main thing to sort out is to save disk space because I can't send a clip just under a-minute-and-three quarters at 744MB's.

    Many thanks.

    Darren.

I do not know about Max. But I would prefer to use VirtualdubMPEG2 for such conversions. You can choose DivX/XviD codec at your preferable bitrate to get the desired file size.

Many thanks. I'll give that a try.
