Friend tried to upgrade - broke pc?!?

I just got a call; a friend tried to replace the cpu & mem. in his pc. After the upgrade, it will not boot; Nothing, completely blank screen. The DVD burner/floppy lights blink, but that is it. After some initial trouble shooting, (over the phone) we found that he didn't have the mem. sticks inserted the whole way. It was pushed down on one end, but the tab was not clicked in on the other end.

Would this have shorted something so it will not boot? Perm. damage? What to do next?

UPDATE - He put all the old components back in, pc boots fine. Obviously a problem with one of the new parts.

Specs; - MSI KM2M
Replaced a Duron 1.1 CPU with Athlon 2600.

Do we need to make processor/clock adjustments in the CMOS or will that pick up on its own? It's been so long since I have done this stuff.

what's up with the memory, old and new, size, type etc?

The pc is now working with the new mem. & the old processor. We need to know if Athlon XP 2600 333MHz Barton Socket-A CPU OEM AXDA2600DKV4D will work with the MSI KM2M mainboard? I thought that the 333 mhz would work, just that it would run the processor at the slower mainboard speed of 266 mhz.

Also, there is a jumper "switch" on the board to set at either 100/133 mhz. That gets set to 133 in this case? Or am I all wet on everything? Sorry, when I only work on 1 or 2 pc's a year, I tend to forget this stuff.

the problem would be the multiplier being locked, you might be able to run the 166/333 cpu at 133/266

earlier models weren't locked so maybe he could set the multiplier higher

of course chances are good his bios will never see the cpu

my advice would have been to save his money for a new computer

He is sending the processor back for one that we know will work; Looks like an Athlon 2200/fsb 266. He is wanting to do this on the cheap...not much available anymore for this dinosaur...
