I'm Clueless on My First Build- Help!

I am looking at my first build. New territory for me.

I am looking at a decent updated computer due to my life changes limits me in front of one most of time. Seems my present AMD64 3000+ is okay for internet, but not much for video projects anymore.

I have done a lot of reading here (Mostly from Chewy, Thank You) on different issues.

I have come up with a wish list from Newegg that I think I have covered everything.

Now most of this is from opinions and reviews.

Am I totally clueless or can this work?

Am I missing anything?

In your professional opinions what would be better?

My family has asked me for birthday ideas, so I thought I would e-mail an updated list for new computer parts. The rest will be bought monthly part by part.

I am guessing the last thing to order is the mobo, memory and processor due to market changes.

I welcome all opinions. This could be fun exploring all the possibilities.

Keep in mind I am not rich (Social Security) but I don't want to build a junky out of date system.

I plan to pick up the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers locally.

more air, better cooler still a little weak for that cpu

with that mobo and weaker power supply I would probably stick to a more overclockable lower power/heat cpu

and that plex drive is not a plex, bad deal all the way around

the system will have 2 hard drives, right?

Okay I have worked on what you have linked to.

I have a few questions then.

1. If that power supply is a little weak, What wattage should I go?
I have had power supply issues before.


2. Do you think 2GB ram is enough or do you think 4GB would be overkill?


On the optical drive I have been reading the new burner thread and it covers many different options and it has changed quite a bit. I'm guessing SATA is the future if your mobo can support it as well as getting rid of the DMA issues. I did not see the need for 2 opticals unless one is especially a good burner and the other a good reader. They seem to be getting to be about the same now that BenQ is not available.

3. Is there a brand that is doing good on SATA or is it still too early in the game to switch from IDE?

4. As far as the HDD's, 2-250GB's good? I have really enjoyed that same Seagate I am using now.

OEM items have always put me in the habit of getting cables. I did miss that that mobo comes with 6 SATA cables.

On the OS I have always had the impression that Pro runs better even though I have run XP home for some time. I beta tested Vista and realized it was always busy calling home as well as question my every move unless I disabled UAC. I did not like that, so I am thinking of sticking with XP till Windows 7 if that could be even better.

xp home comes with most everything that pro has, I really couldn't see hardly any difference

vista really leaves a lot out tho with home basic

thermaltake when you can find a good sale is a safer bet than coolmaster(uck)

for a few xtra bucks i would get this PSU I have used like 10 in the past months and I have one in my secondary rig powering

AMD FX62
2GB Corsair RAM
XFX8800 GTS 320MB (older version)
5 WD Harddrives
1 LG DVD-RW
Antec 900 w/ 4 x 120mm and a 200mm case fan

and the power levels have never been an issue
