Ctfmon.exe

Is it true Ctfmon.exe is either Spyware, or a virus (such as a Trojan or a worm)? Every time I reboot or shut down I get a Ctfmon.exe error as if it's not responding and I have to click on End Now to finish rebooting or shutting down. This has happened for weeks on end and I didn't think much of it until now. All the weeks I've done Spyware and virus scans, Ctfmon.exe has never been detected. I need to know what it is because if it's an important file I don't want to delete it of course. There's a rumour it's part of Office XP that controls the language section.

Definitely not spyware. Also not required if you don't use Alternative Text Input.

Not needed can be removed from msconfig/start-ups to gain resources.
Removed from my computer approximately 1 year ago. ctfmon.exe

CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in Office XP. Ctfmon.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig when you run the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and Speech applets in the Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you don't need these features. Ctfmon can be disabled from Control Panel, Text & Speech Services.

Note - the file will always be located in the System32 folder, if it is located elsewhere it will likely be a worm or trojan! Can cause problems with some other programs if left enabled.

also a pain to truly disable as windows updates have on occasion re enabled it its in imo just easier to ignore
