    DVD/CD Writer Problems

Hello Gang, I have a Lite-On DVD+RW SHOW-822S installed in my computer and just recently has been experiencing some problems burning a data disk. It appears the drive can read the disks but when I try to burn a disk via Nero the disk "stalls" in the middle of the burning process, or fails and returns a error stating something is wrong with the device. I can hear the drive and it seems like it “stalls” and keeps spinning. I tried the drag and drop option for Windows XP and that too also failed.

To help fix the errors I have tried updating the drivers, re-seating the cables and even un-installing the DVD drive from the device manager still with no avail. I have tried to update the drives firmware but it involves burning an image, which I obviously can’t do.

Is there a diagnostic I can run or anything else someone might suggest to alleviate my problem, or is this drive finally coming to the end? I have had it for 2-3 years and use it frequently. If this is the case can anyone suggest a good drive, would I need a specific one for my MOBO or will anyone do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    -Z

try the 832 codeguys from safe mode with drive empty

your drive may be past hope

nero saves logs that would give us some more clues and correctly identify your burner and the mid code of the blank

more accurate information is always helpful, our crystal balls only work so good

welcome. not only to the forum, but to the world of burner, and blank media issues. you've had that lite-on 4 a while and said you've used it a lot so it can be just about done as chewy suggested. also have you used that type media b4 w/that drive? or is it a new brand? drives r funny w/certain blank media. i should know i returned a brand new lite-on several mos. ago because of that. i also found out that it had issues burning period.

that aside, check out my signature. these will burn anything, and i don't think you should have a problem installing them cause of your mobo. also you could download imgburn, and put a blank, or written disc in, and it'll show you the name of your burner, the firmware, and also the mid of the disk in your drive. this way you could let the fellas know, and they'll b able 2 trouble shoot a lil more.

i have a brand new pioneer dvr 112d, and it has issues burning cds, but dvds it does great. my suggestion is if you're looking to buy stay away from this one. this is my personal experience, and also of others, but always the choice is yours.

the nero log is a good way 2 go, but the bottom line is that if it's bad it's bad. the drive or the media. do you have only one bay in your pc? if you had 2 you'd b able to check the burning in the other 1 w/the media also, and then have a really good idea of what's going on.
        SAMSUNG SH-S203B, SAMSUNG SH-S223F,

Take the suggestions and follow the directions. The results will speak for themselves.

        Google is definitely our friend.

in this general computing section there are some stickies at the top about freeing resources, fixing dma and power use

you need to read the first 2 and skim the third one

don't try and burn cd's so fast, 16x is plenty fast enough

hi chewy. good that you suggested the 16x 4 the cds. mab my pita 112d responds better to slower speeds.
                SAMSUNG SH-S203B, SAMSUNG SH-S223F,

Take the suggestions and follow the directions. The results will speak for themselves.

Chewy, I also tried ImgBurn and came up with the following error if that helps, however I will take a look at the stickies you mentioned. Thanks

                  Here is the error:
                  I/O Error
                  Failed to read sector
Logical block address out of range
                  failed to verify sectors

After looking up the error some say it could be the media but I have used this media with success.

I will report back anything new after reviewing the stickies.

                    fix dma

                    burn slower

                        Physical memory : 511MB (523500kB)
                        Free physical memory: 344MB (352424kB)
                        Memory in use : 32
512 megs is fine for a single core cpu that's optimized

                        IF you don't game

Well so far no luck, I updated the firmware with the codeguys as you suggested and fixed the DMA and tried to burn again. I got the same outcome however this time the process did go a bit farther and stalled at 50% instead of the usual 14% or so. The buffer underrun was also at 50% upon failure.

Will get my hands on some new media since I am running low anyways, will also take a second look at the DMA to make sure it did not revert back.

If the drive is shot can you recommend a good replace drive? I can't imagine what I have done so far would interfere with the new drive, but if so that information will help as well.

                              Again, Thanks for your help.
