I have a sometime burning problem - no joke

The DVD image stutters, hangs, restarts, hangs, then usually freezes solid. There are no artifacts. The .ISO or VideoTS sources play perfectly on the desktop. This does NOT happen when I burn from an mpeg source. I'm using Nero 8 to burn — and I have replaced the optical drives and reformatted C:\.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. It gets expensive when printable DVDs are involved!

Barring a lens cleaning on your DVD player, it sound like the same probs. I experienced years ago when using a bad grade of media. I now only use Verbatim & TY.

After reading thru your Golden Rules (I check out pretty much OK), I opened the Nero CDDVD Speed Tool and ran benchmark tests on two drives. Everything seems to be OK there. I ran the scan disc on 3 different burned DVDs. One failed (I knew it would). A second was green all the way through.
The 3rd is a problem — it ran green all the way through but it should have had at least one yellow section. The 1st time I played it thru the standalone, it hung and stuttered. I played it a 2nd time through the problem area: no problems! Did the bad spot move??? And I ran a scan on the disc: all green. BTW, altho the disc is imprinted Dynex, the disc description says it is Verbatim.

I was unable to figure out how to run a disc quality test. No matter what I did (with both your and the Nero instructions), the start button remained grayed out. ???

Nero has a new CDDVD Drive Speed v. 4.7.7.15. It is the only one available now.

The bad spot didn't move - try cleaning your player/reader.

What is the exact media ID code of your Dynex discs please?

Oops, apparently Dynex has deals with more than 1 mfgr. The disc with the "sometime" problem is: RICOHHJPN D01 067 (43h)

You don't want -R DL media in the first place.

Never in a million years (at least for DVD Video). The layer break can not be successully set easily. -R media burns to the edge of the disc and then pads layer 1. The cell for the layer break therefore needs to be set in this way.

Give it a big miss.

I got into the habit of using -R for single layer because a standalone of mine refused (most of the time) to play +R. For double layer though, I've always used +R DL — didn't know there WAS a -R DL and the standalone never objected to the +R DL, only to the +R.

I don't have many of the Dynex left, but I have a load of Maxell and Playo, plus around 150 HP -R printable. Looks as if I'm going to cry over spilt milk for around 3-4 months.

I just ran another Dynex disc through Nero CDDVD Speed. Geeze, that external burner was slow! At any rate the disc came through the scan all green.

my yuden T02's are the best dvd+r's I ever had, wait let me qualify that, the sony branded ones made in japan

my windata ones made in HongKong were the worst dvd+r's I have ever had
