old radeon 9700 pro... bad score with newer drivers

i gave this card frm my old system to a friend's son, plug in the card and windows installed drivers. all fine i ran 3dmark 2001 se and it gave some 10600+ score , then i updated drivers to newer 8.4 and 3dmark went down to 9500+.

1: doesnt this card suppose to score well above 10000?
2: new driver should have done same or better?

system = Hp 2.0 Ghz Pentium 4 512 ddr ram

the new drivers from ati/amd are mostly meant for newer cards, need net? and the cli? part is best left disabled
