DVDR / Video editing on a laptop

    Hi.

I'm thinking of getting a laptop, mainly for internet browsing & DVDR / Video editing.

On my desktop (Pentium 4), I normally use Nero, transcoding progs, Vobblanker, PGCEdit and PGCDemux to name a few. I wanna do the same on a laptop.

So what's the minimum spec do you experts think my future laptop should include:
    - Processor
    - Memory
    - internal HDD etc.

    Cheers!

processor c2d 1.6 ghz or up [1.6 is faster then P4 3.0 ghz HT in encoding]
3 gb ram [ 2 gb if u'll be using xp]
250 Gb is common now, but get smaller 7200 RPM drive [some brands offer that like dell, sony. HP doesnt have that option for consumers yet]
another big external harddrive [usb/ieee1394] could be laptop drive or desktop, seperate harddrive + external box will be cheaper then pre-build external models.
Seems like as soon you buy somehing, v. 2 comes out 1.5 times as fast!..!

      Hi guys,

Rock_King ... let me tell you from experience ... of course your BUDGET dictates it ... and how long do you want to keep the lappy around ...

But let me tell you ... there is a bottle neck with DVD burner player on your laptop ... the fastest one out there is 8x ... so, it will be slower than desktop no matter how fast your processor ... unless you get a USB External Drive ... and that will give you a better results ...

BTW see if you can stay with XP ... since runs your Apps a lot faster ...

I agree with Atifsh ... you can get away with 1.6 ...

If you keep your eyes open you should see a drop in price for Intel T8100 processor units ...

As far as Hard Drive 320GB 5400RPM Western Digital or similar hav recewived Tremendous reviews and they perform as good if not better than a 200GB 7200RPM.

Memory ... as Atifsh said ... go with Minimum ... unless you get it cheap from manufacturer ... you can get aftermarket a @GB stick for less than $20.

      Hope this helps ...

      G!

Dual Core vs Core 2 Duo

        Hi dudes.

I think Dual Core is more in my budget than Core 2 Duo. So can Dual Core can handle such tasks & how many GHz it should have?

I don't care about slow burning (x8 is fine by me).

I think most new laptop comes with Vista than XP. The guys at my local PC shop said XP won't work properly with new laptops.. is this true?

I'm not gonna use the laptop for games, just for internet & DVD/video editing.

I'll either go for an ACER or COMPAQ.

            Budget?

            Hi.

Not sure if I should mention my budget since we don't live in the same country (I'm in South East Asia) & what's cheap to you might be dear to me.

You know what I mean right?

I just want some opinions about Intel Pentium Dual Core laptop & its capability to do what I said above.

Also considering Toshiba laptops as 3rd choice.

            Cheers.

u can always convert ur currency to have an idea..... thats why i ask.

yes i know, currency difference kills

where ever u r cheapest ones will be new dell's 1525 decent laptop.
vostro's 1400/1500 very good with dedicated graphic options [bulky without any looks]
HP's 6720s or similar. [business versions, may come without OS]
toshiba will be expensive compared to dell or even hp if compared specs wise.

anyway... get dualcore 1.8 or 2.0 gigs, get max ram u can, just remeber if u get 4 gb then u need 64bit OS.

basically pentium dualcore = c2d's with 1 mb less cache. [more or less true for lower end c2d's excluding newer c2d's]

                  Budget

Well my budget is MYR2,000 (Malay Ringgit).

This is the ACER I had in mind:

It's about MYR2,000 & comes with Vista Basic (is this O/S ok?).

I think it got a 5400RPM HDD rather than 7200RPM but I can get cheap internal PC HDD & just use IDE/SATA-to-USB cable.

Let me know if this will do the job.

dont like acer myself, but is the cheapest u can get then u dont have option, ask them for single slot 1 gb ram, so u can upgrade later.
make a harddisk image after u get ur laptop so u can restore later. and install xp on it. it will perform much better on 1 gb. rest is fine it will do ur thing.

                        atifsh & Chewy,

What do you guys think about a T5750, 3GB RAM, 250GB 5400RPM and unfortunately Vista Home Premium!?!?

Is the laptop fast enough to do the things we like to do efficiently & fast enouhg (I mean for a T5750)?

BTW, it is a Fujitsu ... which I think it is a Solid laptop.

                        Thanks,
                        G!

vista is fine enough with sp1 and 3 gb...
                          check www.notebookreview.com for fujitsu

one friend of mine doesnt liked his high end fujitsu for some reason.... says its slugish.
                          xp installed on that system.

seems good enough @ 2.0 but has low 2 mb cache compared to 3 and 4 mb and lower 667 FSB compared to 800

Dude ... you get around ... hanging around NBR now.

BTW, your friend high-end Fujitsu ... what is it? And may be I can take it off of his hands for the right price.

                            Thanks,

                              Hi.

Even if I go for Core2Duo, I think all new laptops like ACER are not XP Friendly.

There one new ACER that I like with this spec:
Core 2 Duo [or maybe Centrino type]
                              2GB RAM
                              250GB HDD
                              Comes with VISTA Premium ARGGHH!

I checked the actual total HDD in the shops .. it's really 220GB in Explorer!

Also, how much GB does Vista Premium weigh? The total spaced used on that laptop was about 95GB! If I bought that, I'd be left with about 125GB-ish! Got no idea what software(s) took up all that space!

I could uninstall some of that rubbish but I don't think ACER give CDR/DVDR backups of those software .. all preinstalled only me think! Using XP on new ACER could screw the laptop, so I heard.

So what about ASUS, Toshiba, HP, Compact, BENQ, Lenovo, DELL models? Any comments on if these are still XP friendly?

I also want a laptop suitable for recording videos (preferably MPEG2/DVD quality) from a USB TV Card. Is Hauppauge good card?

                              Comment
