AVG LinkScanner - Frustration of webmasters

@ Dan ... Thanks for the link ... that is exactly what I downloaded ... and I am good to go for 1 year. BTW, I also downloaded the "update" for it.

@ DrinkorDie ... you know I saw your post ... now I am confused!!!

Q1: So, what is the concensus of everyone here at DD ... is Avast "better" than AVG?

Q2: Easier to manage? Easier Interface?

For what is worth ... when I downloaded and installed AVG Free version it never asked me for an e-mail or a Reg Code ... whether free or whatever. And I don't think it expires in a Year time and be forced to Re-Register!!!

I don't use either one myself, I have been using Avira Antivir which is just as good from what I read, small footprint too.

AVG and other scanners are picking up some false positives now. Ironically, it is saying CodeKing's Samsung Patch is a virus and won't even let me upload it to Virus total. His high and mighty kingship is gunna need to fix this one with the scanners.

Looking at those links and being an AVG user, I'd say that AVG Free has most, if not all, those features (and scheduled scans, although, as above, I have had issues with it).

blu: u sure schedule scan is more important then Anti rootkit , Antispam, IM Protection

This is what has worked for me, at least so far:

Completely clean out ALL previous issues of AVG, hard drive, registry, add/remove program, set files to show all hidden because AVG hides old files.
If you have a good registry cleaner do a search for AVG and remove all remains.


Remove any AVG 8 version that is not 8.0.138

Under tools, advance settings

Scheldue scan ----do not able this task, due the scan manually

virus database update schedule----enable this task at the time you want

program update schedule----enable this task at the time you want

If you are running a dial-up connection be sure to adjust the AVG setting for it.

If you use all the default settings with the exception of automatic scheldue scan when installing it also seem to work smoothly.

@ Fast Eddie ... What do you consider a Good Free Registry Cleaner? BTW, since I am not that software savvy ... the Registry Cleaner better be the type that will not let delete something that I will regret 2 minutes later.

Hey guys, I have been doing a little research and it seems some folks are talking up "Avira AntiVir Personal 8" as being the best ... and it is a Free Version.

Q: Has anyone used Avira so far and what is your feedback?

@atifsh - As for anti rootkit, I use Rootkit Revealer, which I think is terrific.

@gonwk - Try CCleaner for registry cleaning.

Could it be that other scheduled tasks with higher priority were interfering with the AVG scan? Something you might want to look into.

No, I schedule them all at different times. And it worked fine for 5 days and today it scanned nothing. Starting to think AVAST might be better.

Since we are sharing ...

I installed "Avira Antivir Persoanl - Free Edition" and it seems is doing a good job. I decided to give it a try since I read few places that it was rated higher than AVG and Avast ... but I am not sure if you put stock in it.

Q: If I have Win XP SP2 with Windows own Firewall, but I install Comodo Firewall Pro ... will Comodo turn off the Windows' own firewall?

And is that a good thing or bad?

BTW, Comodo asks me if I have a 3rd party Firewall ... if so to turn it off!!! Is Windows' own firewall considered 3rd party?

Definitely turn off Windows firewall if you have Comodo, it does a better job anyway. As I said in the post at the top I have been using Avira for awhile now, it has worked great for me. The only downside you will see is the little pop up ad after updates (there is a way to get rid of it though )

Hi Dan,

I started installing the Comodo last night ... and then I got that Q about 3rd party thing and I stopped it. Since then my Windows Shieldy thing does not show up in my Task bar where your clock and stuff are!!!

I wonder why that happened!?!?

BTW, I have a hell of hard time locating the "UPDATES" for the darn AVIRA program ... do you have a URL for the updates. I don't like automatic updates ... plus I don't have my laptop on the net yet.
