Just a question about AVAST ...

The site says you need to register and they send you a key valid for a year. Does this mean that after a year, I need to pay for the professional version?

no you re-register yourself and get another key for a year. its free version u just have to get serial every year.

@ atifsh .. I hope you will not kill me ... but I am messing around, trying "Avira AntiVir Personal Edition". I kinda like it ... I think I saw some place they were RATING it higher than the other Freewares.

I think I recall a thread here that we talked about Antivirus and what to have on your computer for the best Security ... well I can't find it so I am going to ask my Q here if it is OK with you guys (& of course Gals ... generic term).

I have the following on my laptop ... all FREEWARE ... please tell me if I have one too many software and if I am missing something that I really need ... basically to protect my lappy from Virus, Malware, Trojans, Spyware, Ads, ...

1. Avira AntiVirus PE (latest)
2. Comodo Firewall (latest)
3. Spyware Guard
4. Ad-Aware
5. Spyware Blaster

Q: Do I need anything else or should I delete some because they might conflict with each other.

You might like to run cureit by DrWeb and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware every week, too. They're free.

Sysinternals' Rootkit Revealer is excellent (and free) but do nothing while the scan is happening. Run it weekly, too, but before you implement anything, come back and ask for advice.

Secunia's PSI (freeware) will tell you if your progs are up to date (in terms of security issues) and there is an easy solution wizard to update the ones which need updating.

Blu, I was wondering should I leave my #3 and #5 installed or is my #1 and #4 doing the same job!?!?

Basically I wanted to make sure I don't have TOO MANY software and they would be overriding each other!!!

yes avira is rated high but not sure bout their free version.

i like minimum software on my system, thats why i have just avast + S&D + Vista firewall

ur avira does'nt have builtin spy scanner so u need one, but instead of 2 pick just one that work better.

and remember no matter how much software u have and how good they are, its always the smart user that comes first

because i dont install /uninstall much, i have teatimer always on, so i get prompt if somthing is being written to registry.

I don't know where I read it but someone said something about "TeaTimer" being a No-No ... I am not sure in what "Content" I read it.

BTW, I had to send back my new lappy since the 8600M GT what is cooking in IDLE mode. So, when I get my new one I'tt go with your set up

3. May be Comodo Firewall instead of Windows ... since I am still on XP SP2 ... may be I'll go to SP3.

Check out avira on CDFreaks page 5 general software. You can get the professional version free for a 6 months trial. I think you might end up now with about 5 months worth because of the dating of that particular thread that I read yesterday

Anyway I hope that this might help you out to see what the professional version is.

I am still contemplating it myself. I am still using a AVG professional for about five months more on the same kind of deal.

I am not sure about the tea timer. I do know that Spybot Search and Destroy has a teatimer and Chewy has stated that he does not use it and has disabled it in Spybot. I hope that is where you read it. If not I hope that you do find where you have read it.

I use teatimer and it is pretty good - you can now see what system things it is trying to stop and it' easy to decide whether this is malicious action or just you (un)installing something.

yes thats why i like it, even while installing some application i get to know what registery entries its using... and if i dont want them i did'nt allow it . better then to open regedit and then delete manualy.
example .... real player i updated installed few run entries that i dont want...
power dvd has same entries, hp printer has same entries, java has same entries,.......
