I just checked and yes, your system supports up to 8GB. The memory speeds supported include 533, 667, and 800 MHz DDR2 memory.
    9:34:42 PM Atif Sheikh
if i use 800 ram can i still go upto 8 gb?
    9:36:09 PM SMB_Dania_180738
    Yes, correct.
truth me system supports 4 gb max for 800 bus and 8 gb for 667

then something my stupid brain can not get atall.....

      9:36:39 PM SMB_Dania_180738
The memory the Optiplex 745 supports, depends on the type of chassis.
      9:37:00 PM SMB_Dania_180738
In this case, the one you have supports what I told you.
      9:37:34 PM SMB_Dania_180738
There is only one chassis that only supports 4GB or memory at 533 and 667 MHz speeds.

I have had many problems with Dell too

My biggest problem with Dell is their optical drives for firmware updates.

        Toshiba/Samsung (joint venture)
        16X DVD optical drive
        TSST CORP
        TS-H653F SCSI
        firmware D200

        Samsung version
        SH-S223F
        firmware SB00

No listing for firmware update at the DEll site or at a search at google.com

Best I could find is with Samsung with their version firmware SB00

Even their XPS desktop does not even come close to the amount of room and storage in an Alienware desktop as far as optical drives and hard drives.

Dell is the worst make going. My dad and my older brother used to work at Lynx Express where they loaded and unloaded lorries and the amount of Dell PC's as returns as faulty was incredible. Lynx Express took pride with the loading but so many people we sending the Dell PC's back. Anyone in England will know Dell have sold their PC's rock-bottom cheap with large-sized hard drives and RAM with other stuff at £299. This is because they can't sell them the way they planned and they had to knock off about 40 to 50% to get rid of them. I also noticed some Dell models as Desktop PC's are made so thin there's hardly any room for additional internal hardware. Dell are useless.

I wouldn't read too much into that as they didn't tell you why.

It may just require a simple BIOS update.

As to when Dell get around to implementing it is another matter.

The die size is just the size of the actual chip on the wafer.

It's how it's packaged and connected that matters.

According to the Intel website it seems that the E7200 uses the same LGA775 socket type, the same packaging and has the same pin layout as the E6700 which Dell say your motherboard supports.

There may well be technical difficulties that we're not aware of that can't be fixed by a simple BIOS update but unless Dell actually tell you what the problem is then you don't really know where you stand.

Your difficulty here is that probably the only source of this information is Dell since they tend to use custom motherboards.

You could push them for a reason why, as for all we know there may already be a BIOS update in the pipeline that the customer support staff aren't yet aware of.

Depends on whether or not you think it's worth the effort though.

it does... thats the cheapest good processor my system supports, or i get double prized Q6600... always can buy 800 bus c2d's that are pretty ok but i wanted 1066.

The Q6600 is very good value for money at the moment as Intel reduced their prices very recently and this should now be filtering through to retail prices.

It's also easily overclockable from what I've heard.

Good VFM option but as ever it depends on how much you've prepared to spend.

still price difference b/w the e7200 and Q6600 IS almost half for E7200.
                      [US$ converted 210$ for Q6600 and 134 for e7200 ]
Seems like as soon you buy somehing, v. 2 comes out 1.5 times as fast!..!

bios has to have the cpu code for support but more importantly the newer cpu with smaller die use lower voltage, something older motherboards don't always support

I suppose it depends on how desperate you are to upgrade.

If you're in no great hurry you could wait a while and see what info appears.

Presumably you'll not be the only one with this query.

good point. no im not in a big hurry.

question for everyone.. should i go upto 8 gb 667 or get 4 gb of 800 ram on same syste.
right now i have 3 gb ram. i need 2 512 dims for office so i have to buy ram.

for 8gb i will buy two 2 gb sticks for now and then buy 2 more later.
